Default Engine swap 99 to 09 Engine questions...

Going from a 99 5.3l to a 09 5.3L shortblock with AFM/DOD.

I know I need the relocate the knock sensors to the sides

and run the Lingenfelter TRG-002 58x-24x Crank Sensor Trigger Conversion Module 58x - 24x Reluctor Wheel Conversion Module

My question is can I just swap my comp lifters and cam in the 09 shortblock to delete the AFM/DOD along with new lifter trays?

Am I missing anything else?

Thanks in advance!

If you are going to be deleting the afm/dod there is a few extra parts you will need to trade out to do this the correct way.

1. ls2 valley cover
2. lifters
3. lifter trays
4. ls2 front cover
5. oil pump
6. camshaft and springs depending cam choice
7. timing set depending on what camshaft you run
8. then the normal gaskets

send me a pm and I will get you some prices......

why would he need to change his oil pump? ive never changed one during a dod delete....so please school me on why that is a must.

the cam can be a single bolt or 3 bolt cam depending what cam gear he wants. he already has the single bolt, so buy a cam for that. if he wants to swap cams down the road swap to a 3 bolt cam now. if he isnt wanting to change cams then there is no need to get rid of the dod lifters, but if he wants performance from a cam swap then the lifters/trays/cam need to be changed.

Aluminum block AFM motors use the LS4 oil pump. It can starve the pan of oil after deleting the AFM from what I understand.

we dont have an aluminum block, and he shouldnt either unless he has a 6.0/6.2

i can name you 3 people plus me that run a stock DOD oil pump, not including a ton of other people that run them on here with no issues.

Skipperdaddy (09 gmc 5.3/eps cam/roush tvs1900 spins it to 6400rpm)
SkoalBandit (08 chevy 5.3/eps cam 6200-6300rpm) now runs a 6.2 with a stock oil pump
Truckshop swapped to a DOD oil pump on his 6.0 when he swapped in his EPS cam
my 94 chevy with a 08 5.3, 220/224 comp cam i run the stock oil pump.

The oil pump has nothing to do with the dod. I f you delete dod all you have to change is lifters and valley cover. Now on the other hand if you delete the vvt that is when you have to change out the oil pump.....

Some of the 5.3s are aluminum. FWIW Ken, I didn't believe it about the oil pump at first either but forum member "Cam" mentioned it and when I went searching for info I found mention of it in the G8 forums. Its been a while though and I dont remember all the details but it has something to do with the larger oil passages in the aluminum blocks. I can confirm the aluminum motors do use a different part number pump than the iron blocks.

Well now you have really confused me. How does VVT effect the oil pump?

Because the block requires alot more oil volume to feed the 2nd cam bearing journal to get the oil through the cam phaser bolt and up to the cam phaser. So with out this happening inside the block the stock vvt pump is just way to much...
