Hey all, My dad is interested in getting an electric cutout for his truck. He drives an 02' GMC Ext. 4.8L. Hes starting to get more and more interested in modding his truck, which is making me excited since he is usually the more practical one. But to the questions...Are they legal in Texas where we live? Can you pass inspection if you have one, but have it closed? He wants to open it for better gas mileage on the highway. If not, im thinking of trying to talk him into getting a stainless dual exhaust system to start out with. Are there any good mellow to low toned exhaust systems out there I could possibly get him. Basically he wants to start improving his gas mileage since he commutes a lot on the highway to work, so any mods to help this in a reasonable price range would greatly be appreciated. Thanks all

E-cutouts are not necessarily illegal. They are illegal if they are open and your close to a cop. They can give you a ticket for excessive noise pollution if they want to. You will still pass emmissions testing with it closed.
I don't really see any mpg improvement from them though. You would have to have a catless exhaust system to see improvements in mpg's from an exhaust system.
I think Corsa, Magnaflow, or Bassani would be good kits to buy for a better exhaust system.

i have a manual cut out and idle by or drive next to cops all day with it open never once has anyone ever turned a head. louder and louder exhaust/ glass packs etc are out these days and no one will stop you for that kinda stuff, if they stopped you for exhaust noise they'd have to pull you over at a stop light when the cops mirrors where shaking from the system 6 cars back and they wont. you will pass all tests and inspections with it closed. no problem.
