Default Dyno results: "Project Blue Thunder"

Geoff @ Thunder Racing purchased an '02 extended cab 5.3l Silverado a few months back. Since we just can't leave anything stock, we decided to baseline the car before adding any major mods. This resulted in 241rwhp/263rwtq with only 2000 miles on the odometer back in early November. Not too bad for a bone stock truck! It was pretty funny because an '00 GT w/ some minor mods had dynoed just before we put the truck on the rollers. It did 235rwhp. LOL

Since we finally got some free time around the shop last week, we decided to bolt on a few simple mods. First up was a K&N FIPK kit. Here is what resulted:

K&N FIPK dyno results

It didn't really pick up much peak HP/TQ, but gains of as much as 16rwhp/12rwtq was found down low. Not too bad, we thought.

Then, we installed a Hypertech 160* thermostat and hpp3 powertuning. The truck really responded well to this mod.

HPP3 dyno results

The truck really seemed to like the power tuning. However, Geoff is going to go back soon and use LS1 edit and fine tune the truck even more.

At this point, we feel the stock manifolds/catback are the big restriction. All runs were made through a complete stock exhaust (manifolds, cats, and muffler).

Next up on the mod list:

- Corsa catback
- ASM headers w/ high flow cats
- ASP crank pulley
- LS1 electric fans

After this, look out for a Yank torque converter to be installed and maybe a GTP heads/Thunder truck cam package?? Stay tuned...

Sweet, I am glad to see yall doing a truck project. Do yall have a multi-user license for ls1edit? I was just wondering if yall tuned trucks on a reg basis. I may also come talk to yall about a heads/cam package for my truck in the not so distant future.

It is going to be awhile on the LS1 edit for the '02 trucks. However, when it becomes available, we will have the unlimited version where we can tune as many trucks as we like.

I didn't thing LS1 Edit would be out for the '02 models for a while. If it is, I'd like to see the LS1 file for it.

Keep us informed on the project.

About time you started modding the truck. And when ls1edit comes out I'll be by. Right now I'm running Superchips tuning(less TM) with HPP3 fine tuning. Haven't tested this combo at the track, but with the Superchips I ran 14.10 and HPP3 a 13.91....Basically all that tells me is that the truck likes to rev . Will be doing the custom tuning until I decide on the new motor package to build.

The HPP3 and K&N are about the only mods I will be doing to my truck performance-wise for a while. I hear they could get me close to 14s, which is just fine for my rig. Easily removable, and a good bang for the buck!

Tony, the hpp3 and K&N made the truck much more fun to drive. Low end was greatly improved. Once we get some headers and a catback on the truck, I expect the truck to really come alive. We feel the big bottle neck now is the exhaust.

Geoff is going to need some new tires with all this new-found low end torque.

I'm glad to see y'all doing a truck project as well! I can vouch for the power from the FIPK. My average MPG went up to 15-15.5 MPG while pulling a 2,000# trailer with my 3,325# car on it. I was averaging 13 MPG or so with the stock intake. I would like to install a Gibson catback next. Are y'all going to dyno just a catback or do all of the exhaust at once?
