Default Duramax airbox??

What advantages/disadvantages are there to running the lower part of the Duramax airbox on LSX gasoline engines? I have seen a few posts now with people using this with a K&N filter. Can it be used with stock sized K&N? Is it really worth it? Thanks!

From looking at the D-Max air box in person, the bottom part has a large rectangular opening in it on the side facing the front fender. I dont know how much power there is in using it, if any. But if you want, just hack your stock airbox on the bottom and run some piping from the bottom of the box to the front bumper and you will have a homemade ram air.
