Default Dual Exhaust Exit differences

Hey guys, let me start off by saying that I have done a seach, and after searching for the past few days, and not really getting the answer I'm after, I finally decided to ask. Anyway, I've got a '99 ECSB with the 4.8 and a 5 speed, and I was going to get my duals redone as I really don't like the sound of 2.25 inch pipe and I don't like the dual exit before the passenger's side tire, as I have to put down that window if I want to hear anything. I'm going to get my exhaust redone with 2inch pipe and no cats/mufflers (because I'm a redneck and 2inch pipe + no cats/mufflers + 5 speed = ) I've never owned an ECSB before, and I figure atleast one of you guys has been in the same spot I'm in. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have ever had both 90 degree exits behind each wheel and both pipes strait out the back, and I was wondering if you could tell me how much of a difference there was between the two in interior sound levels? I like to be able to hear my exhaust when I'm cruising down the road. I really like the look of dual rear exit, but I'm not a fan of the 45ed look, although I do like the look of each pipe exiting 90 degrees behind each wheel. I've had both setups on my Bronco (and you could hear the pipes really good either way), but from where that is an SUV, I expect there to be a big difference from a truck.

Now I don't have a tailgate on my truck so I don't know if that would make any difference or not (I'd think it would, less sheetmetal for the sound to pass through, but I could be wrong). I know this kind of seems like a stupid question, but I really don't want to do each pipe 45ed out behind the wheels, that's just not the look I want. Mainly I want to be able to hear my exhaust pretty good, but if there isn't a HUGE difference between the two, I could sacrafice alittle to get the dual rear exit, as I really like that look. I've ridden with a few friends of mine that have RCSB's and pipes out the back and 90ed, but I'm worried about what that 2 feet or so of cab would do to destroy the interior sound levels, so I thought I would ask the experts. As none of my friends have Extended Cabs, I can't get the answer I'm after. . I have had the pipes on my truck angled at 90 behind each wheel before and it had good sound levels inside the truck with the 2.25 pipes. Anyway, thanks for any help you guys could give!

Dual two inch pipes is gonna be too small for that motor. I got dual 2.25 inch coming out at about 45's behind the rear tires and it sounds good like that, and that was with straight pipes at one time. I don't think there'd be much difference with 90's or even straight out the back. In all cases the sound would be directed away from you and you're driving away from the direction of the sound anyway so it wouldn't make a lot of difference.

I had them done at 45's with a 40 series flowmaster on the '99 with a 5.3 that I used to have with 2.5" pipes and I had a 40 series on my truck that I have now with the 4.8 when I bought it and the exhaust exited out the back with 2.5" pipes. To me I heard the exhaust more and it seemed to be louder with the 45's. I'm planning on going with the exhaust 45'd out each side behind the tire when I finish my exhaust after Christmas, but it'll be a bit louder with the mufflers I have now and depending on if I decide to run 3" pipe or step down to 2.5".

Actually according to every chart I've found, true duals with 2 inch pipe on a stock 4.8 is just right. Right now with the 2.25 it puts the powerband too high. You don't feel the powerband kick in till about 2500-3000 rpms which is way higher than my truck normally sees during crusing from work to the house and such. I'd had both 2inch and 2.25 on my Bronco (which has the 351W) in every exit location possible aside from stacks and I found that the 2inch gives the best mix of the lowend and top end that I'm looking for. My truck doesn't normally go above 2000rpm unless I hit a steep hill (thanks to my 5 speed keeping the rpms really low ) As I mostly just do open country road driving, with very little stopping. Now, I'm not trying to argue with you or anything, just stating personal experience. Thanks for the replies though guys. I'm really starting to lean towards the dual rear exit. I didn't figure there would be much of a difference aside from the sound echoing off things while crusing. Thanks agian! Any else have any input?

Dual 2" would sound wicked. I know a fellow with a 350 and dual 2 inchers and glasspacks and its the best sounding truck in town! Even at idle cruising, she has a nice loud deep throb, and when it's wide open............. look out ears!

I put dual 2.5" on my truck, and i wish i would have went to 2.25 or even 2, 2.5s are too big, and it just don't have the SNAP!

I recommend dual rear 90s! I love it especially in town, she echoes on the buildings going down the main drag!

Duals out the back aren't anything special to me, i find it directs all the sound behind you...... i would say its the quietest.

Rear 45s i heard are for pulling trailers since you don't get the echoes from rear exits, and you don't get the full effect of rear side exits.

I recommend rear 90s for you, it would be the loudest of those three, i believe they look the best, and in my area, only farmboys like my self do the rear 90s!

In my opinion, straits are loud, but they often sound awkward, i find 12" glasspacks get rid of the akwardness, and once they burn out, are pretty much just as loud.

And to anyone who thinks strait pipes are too loud on the highway, by the time you hit 60mph, the only thing you can hear is wind!!!

Cool

Well I stopped by my local exhaust guy today, and had a chat with him and a few guys that were in the shop. Luckily one of them had a 96ECSB 1500 with a 5.7, 5 speed, and true duals with 2.25inch pipe, no cats/mufflers, and no tips and pipes strait out the back. I asked him what he though about my question, and since us hicks like to help each other out, me and him made a run in his truck down the road and back. He (much like me) runs the hell out of his truck, and even on the 5.7 and both windows down, I really wasn't happy with the level of sound that got into the cab, so I decided right there to just run each side 90ed out behind each rear tire (I figured since the 5.7 would slaughter my puny 4.8 sound-wise any day, that my decided setup would be best for me).

I had an appointment made for next Thursday to get my duals done with each side exiting behind the rear tire. Got me a price for about $127 and a few pennies (including tax) for 2 inch true duals from behind each (gutted) cat, exiting the way I wanted with no mufflers. I've been to this guy many times before, and he does exellent work at an extremely reasonable price. Well, thanks agian for all your help guys, sorry to pester you guys so much, just should of stopped by the shop first, lol. Thats my luck, after I ask on here, I finally meet someone in person who can answer it for me. If anyone is interested I'll borrow my friends digital camera that records sound, and record a clip sometime next weekend, if it's not raining/snowing or the next time I get a chance when it's half way decent outside. Anyway, thanks alot for all the help guys, this is why I love this forum!
