GM/Chevy had replaced my front u-joint/slip yoke when I originally complained about this problem. They also did something to the rear but didn't replace it as I had asked them to. I knew the problem was based in the rear u-joint but they didn't see it that way. Truck was fine for about 2 weeks after they worked on it.
Brought it back one month later for the same problem and told them to make sure they REALLY checked the rear u-joint, as I was sure it needed replacment. All they did was greased it. It was quiet for 2 weeks again and then went back to it's old tricks.
Same thing probably that you are experiencing. Coming to a stop or taking off slow from a start there feels like there is a moment when there is excessive slack/slipping/grabbing and then it goes. Coming to a stop feels like the whole back end moves up/down just a bit.
I can always just keep re-lubing it myself, but I would really like them to replace the stupid thing before the warranty goes out. Mine is a 2000 Z71 as well, and yes, there is a shitload of slack in the entire driveline.

I had the same problem. Put in spicer u-joints and put molly grease on the inside of the yoke. I still have the problem now about 1-2 months after but it is a more dull clunk. Not the hard snap it was.
So whats a part number for the new yoke? If I can buy one in the next week I'll put it on and tell everyone how it works.

Just got my truck back from a dealer up here in Columbus. Took in for same problem, (plus a blown speaker, tail lights bulbs were melting in housing, and front suspension noise and vibrations, anyways) Said they had a kit they were using for the yoke. But they could not perform my warranty because of ay 2" shackles I put on the summer? Wrong alignment! What ever?!? I will just pack some grease in myself.
Also not to change the subject, but they wanted to charge $200+ to up date miles on my new gauge cluster, it would take 3 to 4 days. Ya right! Dealerships, they get you any way they can!

Mine is a 2000 and had the same problem bad. I had new gears and carrier installed and now it is totally fixed? I bought new ujoints too but now I don't need them. It used to do it every time I came to a complete stop, but now I can slam the brakes hard is it doesn't do it. Weird. One of the carrier bearing races was scratched up but I doubt that would cause it. Perhaps something in the differential slowly wears and goes out of alignment just enough to cause this clunking.
