Question Do you have a service manual?

I see a lot of questions posted on this and other websites that are pretty easily answered in the service manual (not that haynes POS, the real 4 volume manual). So I'm just curious, how many of you actually have one?

Yes, I have both the factory four volume set and the Haynes. Whenever I do something fairly major, I read both, but consider the factory manual the true reference. The nice thing about the Haynes/Chilton type is that they often have substitute approaches to using the special tools recommended by the factory manual. Using search engines on the web is invaluable too.

Do you have your owners manual? If so, thumb to the back, it has the info there. The "real" manuals are 4 volumes and i'd guess 6000 pages or so. They are the same ones you see the techs using in the dealership.

The only reason I was looking at them a few weeks back was to get info on how to swap the differential out. The Haynes type didn't have any info about the differential passed getting the axles out. I tossed it back on the shelf then. If the factory one wasn't to much, I would consider it. Anyone know the price on one of those?

You can buy them here.

http://www.helminc.com/helm/homepage.asp?r=seo11502

They're under Shop/Service information once you select your vehicle. The 4 volume set for the 99'+ trucks is $120.

Nevermind L-Eater beat me to it.

No difference. Helm is a publisher that publishes maintenance and parts manuals as well as CD's for GM, Ford, Chrysler, and others. Look up the Helm web site and you'll see that they are the major player in technical publishing for the domestic manufacturers.
