Default Do I need to Port my HEADS?

I went to a shop to ask him for howmuch he's gonna install the cam for me he told me I need to port the heads to feel the power out of the cam. I have the TSP 220 .581 114LSA he said I have to port the heads So will I get more power for porting the heads and will the Compression stay the same or it will go down or Up?

you dont have to, but with a .581 lift, you could benefit from the heads being ported. Is it necessary? No

years ago, RPM outlet told me i wouldnt feel the power unless i put a TB spacer on. LOL

it would definately help, but 25hp is hard to feel in a heavy *** truck. the track is where you will see the difference.

There isn't a whole lot of porting that can be done on these newer ls heads. They are pretty opened up and optimized from stock. Other than different heads all together with larger valves your not going to increase flow much more than the high lift/duration cam will with stock. Theres isn't much meat that can be removed anywhere on the head without getting too close to punching through is what i've found. The intake ports are virtually port matched from stock (with stock intakes), and the exhausts as well. There is virtually no casting flash, or flaws on these heads. You can polish the exhaust ports, and combustion chambers to a shine if you'd like. I would leave a rougher surface on the intakes if you buff any in there for better turbulence in the air fuel mixture. Be careful if you do polish the combustion chambers because any extra material you remove decreases your compression ratio and you are working with aluminum!

What you can do with the stock heads is have them milled down. This will increase your compression ratio and boost your power. Do a very mild port, more-polish job while you have them off and your done.

To answer your questions, port and polish jobs do improve performance, but how much on these heads? An old iron head 350, yea. The cam alone will give you good gains, and it sure doesn't require porting to do that, and finally porting and polishing can change compression ratio if you were to port the combustion chamber, you don't want to do that, thats for cylinder head machinist's or engineers, you would only want to polish whats already there.
