Default do i need more low end torque?

alright vehicle as in sig, ran a best of 15.5 hot lapping in humid 88 degree weather...ive decided on getting a cam and a tc. I like the price of a tbtc and the fact that i will be doing minor towing 3 or 4 times a year.

With that being said i want to go with the lopiest meanest biggest cam i can go with without killing my low end torque.

overall i want to gain lopey sound, and drop my 1/4 as much as possible without sacrificing too much gas mileage, with that bein said what cam is for me, and how much mileage will i lose...and realistically what can i do to my quarter mile time.

I talked to someone at comp cams and they said a small cam like a 212 218 on 116lsa would be the best for me as it would give me low end torque to get me moving...But i dont think i will find the gains of this cam worth the swap or money of a broke college kid. So if i do it i want to do it right. This is my daily driver.

what about like a 220 220 112lsa
what about like a 22o 224 112lsa
or a 218 221 114 LSA
these are all cams for sale used.

Doesnt have to be these just throwing out ideas based on my research.

I agree 100% with the CompCAMS guy's advice. The 212/218 will be a great camshaft for your needs because he is absolutely right. Once you get above 220 duration in a 5.3L your towing goes down the drain. I just felt this happen with my uncle's Sierra. He swapped in the XR273 from CompCAMS which is a 220/224 .530/.534 on a 112 LSA and the 5.3L runs like a raped ape when he smashes the pedal down. The only problem is we towed a bobcat trailer without the bobcat on it (so realistically only 1500-2000lbs) and the motor didn't have enough low end torque to maintain speed on the highway going 65mph. It was constantly down shifting from 4th to 3rd, where before even with the stock 5.3L cam it could maintain that speed even with a full load on the trailer. He's had it tuned for the cam too, so that's not the problem.

If you want to hammer the 1/4 mile times, invest in a nitrous kit and be done with it. 100-250hp shots while on the bottle, good gas mileage and stock towing characteristics when not on the bottle. Nitrous kits are getting cheaper and cheaper and the safety of the aftermarket kits are getting better and better, so you get the most power for the lowest cost without sacrificing anything for the motor.

The Original Poster is probably referring to the 6.0 L in his signature, not a 5.3L.
The larger the displacement the longer the duration can be, proportionally with increase in displacement of course.

That sentence makes my head hurt.

Why is it more and more people nowadays are inserting camshafts into their motor just for sound? Be real to yourself. Sounds like this is your daily driver, you want nice USABLE power. Gas mileage, smooth idle, etc. Don't put anything more than a 218 duration in and you'll still make good power and be able to smoke a honda and 90% of all the other **** on the road.

Torque gets you there (ET) & Horsepower keeps you there (MPH).

Go For the Torque.

Sorry ya I didn't read the signature I assumed a 5.3L. In that case a camshaft like the one my other Sierra buddy has at work will do. It's a 218/224, .562/.567 on a 112 LSA. It can really get his 35" tires moving quick and it's a 1500 HD Sierra with a 4" lift plus T-bars cranked.

Option 3 seems to be your best bet if you are stuck with buying used. Otherwise I'd have CompCAMS grind another one of those 218/224's the Sierra 1500HD is using now in his 6.0L.
