Default Distributor/alternator install

Just bought an '87 K5 Blazer, that has a TBI 350 that needs a bit of help. The truck cuts off occasionally when I come to a stop or put it in reverse, and idles pretty poorly when it's cold - very rough, rpms drop down nearly enough for it to stall out, etc. I'm going to change the plugs and wires along with the fuel filter this weekend, and was thinking about doing the distributor, cap, and rotor along with that, just to get it out of the way. Thing is, I've never had to replace a distributor setup before, so I don't know what's all required to do it. I've probably got all the tools necessary, except a timing light.

I'm also thinking of replacing the alternator, simply because I think it's still got the stock unit, and probably needs to come out. Is that as simple as a "Pull old one out, put new one in" deal?
