Question cracked crank 5.3 whipple! go 6.0 ?

just put a whipple on my 2000 silverado .132 miles later I think I cracked my crankshaft. gonna flatbed it to a shop in anahiem calif? rebuild as 5.3 if the block is ok or should I go 6.0 or bigger while they have it all apart. either way I want a cam with headwork. some forged steel rotating assembly .the shop said that the 7 lbs boost broke cranks on 5.3 a lot . they showed me ceramic coated pistons and parts to take the boost. How do you get a non stock 5.3 or 6.0 conversion to run with the 5.3 whipple system. here in calif I have to smog it every 2 years after the first 5. need advice pronto.

dude whats with the coughin you chokin on dust over there? I did when I was much younger in viet nam during the war.seriously I think more cubes is better. my 2000 ecsb has jba hdrs with a custom "duels" exhaust.3.73 eaton,hpp3,volant ram, granetell maf,msd ,.ran 15.66 stock with mods 14.84 94.4 at carlsbad raceway.full street legal. never ran with the big bbk throttle body on it,but my g tech pro showed 6.4 to 60 and 14.74 96.7. I wanted more so I put the whipple on it. broke the motor jumpin on itI gotta rebuild it so I figure now is the time to go bigger and modify the motor itself not just bolt ons.I hope you get home to your truck and the world soon.

I've really never heard of these cranks breaking. They can have piston or rod problems, but the cranks seem pretty strong.

Depending on how much $$$ you want to spend, you have lots of options. Cheaply, you could buy a complete 6L (less than $1000 used) and drop it right in with no machine shop work. For more money, you could have a shop build it up with forged internals.

I hope you are using a reputable shop, and one that knows the ins and outs of GenIII motors. Good luck.

There are people inluding myself that run more tht 7 psi with out a crank cracking.....What makes you think you cracked a crank? Have taken the motor apart?? What are the symptoms of a cracked crank?

how did you crack the crank, it should be basicly the same thing as a stock 5.7 crank and those have been pushed alot harder than 7psi.

I talked to superior automotive enginerring. on woodland?in anaheim I bought new. 40k on it . ecsb 2000 jba ,duel exhaust,hpp3, maf, throttle body. ran 14.84 at 94.4 at carlsbad before the throttle body. then 14.76 . so i put whipple on . removed hpp3 etc. jumped on it after 132 miles. heard a loud ping thougt something shot out the back . then the truck started sounding like a bad diesel. crank pulley wobbles visibly when i start it,i will know more once its tore down.

Sounds bad .... I would like to say though .. I know for a fact a stock crank can handle 7psi.
