Default Cracked block.

Just got my 06 lq9 in my 93 z, had it 2 weeks an it leaked out 5 quarts of oil, take it to the shop an they find tht it has a hair line crack along the back of the block,can I jb weld it or nickel weld it? Its near the oil filter towards the oil valley.am i screwed? I don't have any extra money to throw at this.

Not right now the shop is an hr away an I'm working. He said it is a hairline crack, looking for some advice. Thanks.

I would say no. I have nickel welded cracked cast before without a problem, but was cracked due to heat(exhaust manifold). I assume it is cracked due to stress as your block doesn't get that hot. I would also assume that it is on an oil galley as it lost so much oil. A pic would help though. How much HP are you making? I have only heard of breaking a black with extreme HP levels. Or was the engine bought from a wreck?

Got it from a wrecked ss. An yes it is near the oil galley.

If that's the case I would try it, you really have nothing to lose. I would obviously make sure the galley is fine, and make sure you keep extra special attention to your oil pressure.

if i was you id talk to whoever you got it from first. maybe they can get you another motor.....since that one is cracked and no one was able to know until you put it in and had 60psi going through it.

Well it is out of warranty but the block has been cracked since I bought it.

Damn, I had a crack in the same place on my 5.3, i wondered if anyone else would surface a story like this too, I dont know what caused mine at all. Its right above the oil pan whaere the threaded galley plug is where the factory rifle-drilled it isn't it? I know exactly where you are talin about

I haven't actually seen it he has just told me. Think he said its leaking beside a bolt or anything near it.
