On a budget, nothing wrong with stock rods or crank. Stock crank can handle a TON of power. Unless you are building a stroker I wouldnt spend money on a crank. If money allows, upgrading rods would be the only thing to look at. Also, what power level are you looking at? 500-600rwhp on stock rods seems pretty common these day. Just gotta keep the tune right

Is this going to be a N/A, N2O or Boost motor? If it is a N/A motor I would not hesitate to use the LQ9 rods in a rebuild as long as it isn't going to be spun to 7K+. For a nitrous or boost motor, it all depends on the levels. As Randy said, the tune has to be right. Detonation and RPM is what kills rods in N/A motors. Crank is a no brainer. I used a new stock crank on my otherwise fully forged and studded 370 boost motor.

It will see spray as stated in first post. Tune will not be an issue, as I have a great tuner.
My main concern here is will rods and a crank still hold their structural integrity after seeing relatively minor surface rust? Not looking to break any records with this... just be a solid runner for about a year with frequent track time on juice.

surface rust on the rods itself shouldn't cause a problem. clean them real well with scotch brite pad. now rust where the bearings go and where the piston pin goes, then they will need to be reconditioned.
