Default Common myths, can anyone crack them?

I am not some money spending rice burner who was given the car by his great grandma, so therefore I choose to do my research. On every forum I ever join the questions are generally the same. Dont flame this thread with butt dynos, give first hand informative information for viewers to learn and make educated purchases. I am particularly interested in the Intake and porting of throttle body.

I have scanned through many articles of CAI and just plain jane intakes. One person will claim gains, then another will claim in gains. I have found a place that sells intakes, and no not cai for less than $100 shipped. http://stores.ebay.com/ChromeIntakes-Store
Does anyone have any dynos/datalogs to prove an intake makes a difference? Are these trucks (5.3l) starving for air?

Ported throttle body- Dont hear/find much on this one. Curious if it makes any difference and a link with details on how they ported and where they ported.

Straight Pipe- Many claim loss of low end torque, however they claim they want to eliminate backpressure with a muffler. Thats an oxymoron. How much backpressure is needed, and whats the harm other than a ticket.

Custom tune- Whats the difference between 87 and 93, will bumping the timing make that much of a gain. I have yet to see a dyno chart of this.

Underdrive pullies- I realize not much power is to be gained, but lets see a dyno. Some claim ASP are the best. Lets hear first hand accounts.

Electric Fans- Some make large claims and larger mileage claims. While others say electric fans put a strain on the electric system which draws just as much power.

As we all know TB spacers and electric superchargers do not work.

ahhh i dont have the time to explain but yes do all you mentiond but the straight pipe..ill leave it to some one else who has time to explain..cold air intakes, well choose the one thats the prettiest to ya. custom tune- find some one local that can dyno tune, its by far the best choice.. underdrive pulleys, do it, ive seen 7-10 hp gains with them. i used to work at at dyno shop, no im not finding dyno graphs for ya. electric fans, just find some ls1 fans off an fbody at a junkyard. if your worried about an alternator, buy a bigger one.. to me turning an alternator pulley takes less hp than turning a 17in fan, but hey what do i know?? ported throttle body, there are several places on ls1tech that will port them. how i dunno.. i did mine with a air grinder and several different bits. if your going to doubt me get ready for every one one to say pretty much the same thing i did..just add a thottle body spacer, tornado, and twin electric supercharger and youll be good!! jk

sounds like more of a nuisance than anything, a good free flowing exhaust is the ticket

YES. YES, timing is everything....well next to boost pressure. Run the damn hi-test, it's a whole $5 more for 26 gallons!!
Underdrive pullies- I realize not much power is to be gained, but lets see a dyno. Some claim ASP are the best. Lets hear first hand accounts.
Freeed up power is freed up power, but I'd do it as a last ditch to gain a few ponies
Electric Fans- Some make large claims and larger mileage claims. While others say electric fans put a strain on the electric system which draws just as much power.
Freed up power is freed up power...doit!

As we all know TB spacers and electric superchargers do not work.
Correct!!

gotta agree with the above. Cai find a cheap one, efans and od pulley both give more power...e-fans are more noctiable of course as it's a bigger jump from the fan etc.
A tune will make a world of differance. Do it and do it soon.
No handhelds are not the same thing as a real tune.
If you want straight pipe add a e-cutout and boom there ya go without the all the time loud pos sound of a straight pipe.
TB should give ya better throttle response and gain a few ponies at the wheels. It's easy to do so why not.

You do know that the Electric fans are not on ALL THE TIME??
If the on/off temps are set right, they will hardly ever come on.
And they clear up alot of room under the hood. Better cool down times if you have manual override switches......

for me, a ported TB might not have given me any noticible rwhp, but the throttle response is definitely better. free mod if you have a dremel and 2 hours to spare. worth it IMHO.

Tb spacers, junk don't work, the electric fans give a few mpg, free up hp, they don't run all the time, I agree, more hp to turn a big fan then a lil pulley.. Intakes, take your pick, they all do the same. Ported tb's give ya more response, but hp numbers are still out there. Strait pipe, depends, you staying na or FI, na will like a lil more back pressure then FI.. How much, I couldn't tell ya...

I agree with teh above..

I had electric fans on a old 5.8l f250, I could not notice any difference before or after. Maybe it was just because I had 35s. I am thinking about getting a stock set of fans off a newer silverado. Those flex a lites were a pain when I had them. They drew so much electricity that my lights dimmed. The pullies seem to be a large pain for such muniscle gains and aggervation of less AC. I had long tubes on my old truck, but could not notice any difference in the power, guess it takes alot of a gain to make a heavy cumbersome truck do the boot skootin boogie. I guess it goes without saying the supercharger is the only worthwhile modification.
