I had an 89 c-1500 I played with alot. I made some mistakes with it. However it did make 407 lbs torque at read wheels. I got a 4 bolt main 383 short block, rv cam, ported head, over sized valves, holy over sized TB, msd ign and tuned ecu.
If I had it to do again and money was not a problem. I would go with the 838 again, thro on a set of trick flow head, use a port injection set up off a 86-89 tpi camaro, step the cam up a little bit from the rv cam ( not to much bigger). But at some point you have to look at ur trans and rear end as much as you do your motor. Yes I had every part planed out before life forced me to sell the truck.

Something like a $99 summit 204/214 cam and lifter set might work well. The tbi cam is puny, something like 17x@0.050 I believe. Look up "ultimate tbi mods" as well.
