yea, the 01+has much better heads but the 00 and older just wont work due to the thick crank flange. as far as a know there is no way around this.

if you are not in a big hurry you should be able to get one for $1500 or less, just have to keep your eyes open.

recently someone was selling takouts with the piston slap noise for $900, not sure if he sold what he had or not, if your going for a sturdy build up you could get one of those and put some good rods and pistons in.
