Default Canned my 6.0L idea & goin Turbo!

I really don't feel like tearing the motor out and doing the swap. Plus all the headaches off getting a good block, running out of nitrous and such.

My buddy has an up and comming speed shop and is an STS dealer so he is hooking me up with good prices and the guys at STS were extremely helpful in choosing a system for my truck.

I'll be using a GT35 Turbo (good for 680HP) in the rear mount kit.

42lb 8.1L Marine injectors
STS Alk kit
STS boost controler
New cam ground for a turbo application

This should be good to handle 10-11psi safely. With tuning I'll see how far it can go before detonation.

Eventually when I pop something (hopefully not till next year) I'll rebuild the motor with forged items, better fuel system and up the boost to 15+ hense using the bigger turbo now.

It should work out perfect since the turbo will see max boost sooner than most centrifugal blower kits so I'll be able to launch near max boost which will mean crazy amounts of TQ off the line! Imagine 40mph 1st gear drops with 500+ft.lbs. of TQ I also wont have the issues of boost drop right after a shift.

Plus, it's a TURBO on a gas truck. That is just cool as hell by itself

Its an interesting idea, but I really don't like the location of the air filter. It looks like you are just asking for tons of dirt and debris, not to mention water, all over your filter. You'd need to change it once a week.

That kit needs a snorkel kit like off roaders use that gets fresh air from a protected source. That kit has a mile of tubing as it is, whats a few more feet.

they address the filter concerns, i think it comes with some kind of sock you put over it and they say they drove their car all summer in the rain even and no problems. for basic driving i think it would be fine, if your driving thru the slop in the winter like i do then it might be a problem.

Did ya'll see the STS turbo kit on that new ext. cab 5.3 in the new Sport Truck? Looked kinda cool, except for what you guys are talking about, the air filter location. I wish that they would have some kind of solid proof how much power they are making with it, they say in the mag about being at least or around 100hp.

These things are made here in Utah.
Theres a couple guys with Toyota's that have the kit that run at the track all the time. Stock v8 tundra's run ~17.0 that kit at(I think)6psi had them running~15.7's. A v6 Tacoma was running about the same(15.7) with the kit.

My procharger at 8psi took me from 16.9 to 14.8 here at the same track. One thing I noticed was their 60' times were in the 2.6 range. Worse than my 2.4 with the stock stall. So I'll bet lag is pretty bad especially with the stock stall.

From what it looks like in the pics it is just a K&N cone with that off road sock that they say "Keeps the filter clean longer", but wouldnt it do that at the expense of airflow?? I guess its a trade off, they say that remote mounting under the truck like that allows it to reamin alot cooler since it isnt soaking in engine heat. Id love to hear how this setup turn out. In the mag at 4500 ft the stock time was like 17.22 and at 6lbs it was like 14.7. I have the mag in the bathroom, but my girl is in there and locked me out . With the alk kit and more boost that setup could be pretty sick!!
Goodluck
Are you going to do the install yourself???
They said in the article that it is so easy and that they did it in like 30 min and the average person could do it in 4-6 hours with avg mechanical ability!

I'll keep you guys updated as I go. It should be a fun adventure

I talked with Rick (STS owner) today and we are gonna go with the GT35 turbo which is good to 680HP so it should be fine for what I plan once I blow this motor up. LOL Plus without going too big I shouldn;t have too much problems spooling up and defeating lag because of the 3000 stall. Rick said I would be somewhere near max boost right off the line if I can get it to stall that high. 8-10psi at launch would be SICK!

I am not too concerned with the air filter location since I have a stock height 4X4 and I don't really do any offroading anymore. Even on a lower vehicle it just means more filter maintance. That's simple enough.

Everyone that I have talked to that has heard the kit can't stop talking about the way it sounds. It is just so unique. I am gonna try it without the muffler first since I have to remove it anyway to install the turbo.

I find out monday if I will be able to afford it and if so then I'm placing my order!

I'm not crazy about the air filter location either. One option, if you could bring yourself to cut a hole, would be to run a little tubing and mount the filter up in the bed behind the wheelwell.
I guess you could always run tubing all the way back to the front...

Man the more I read about this kit the more I like it!

It seems they have almost thought of everything. I just spent like 30min or so reading all the FAQ stuff on their site and I am pretty stoked.

Their Meth kit when coupled with the dual stage boost controler makes things ultra safe. It can be set up to arm teh Meth kit when your flip the boost crontol button to hi AND it can be used to default back to the low boost setting when the Meth kit runs out of fuel or is not pumping for some reason.

The fact that the turbo is mounted so far back you end up with about the same cooling effect as a standard front mount turbo system with intercooler and less pressure drop.

I also didn't truely understand how turbos worked. I assumed they were like the superchargers I was familiar with but got their energy form somewhere else. I didn't realize they can hit full boost at such low RPMs depending on load. Now i can get a smaller cam, stop spinning my motor so high, and have near full boost @ WOT throughout my whole rpm range! That is just crazy.

Now I have to see if my AS&Ms are a waste for this type of setup. If so maybe I can sell them and recoup some of the cost of this system
