Default Can exhaust tips damage a stepside bed?

I have a 2WD 2002 single cab, stepside Silverado. My exhaust exits with two 3" chrome tips right before the passenger side rear tire. Right now I have the tips maybe 3" from the body because I was afraid the heat would damage the bed of the truck since its a stepside. How close can I tuck the tips to the body when I have everything welded up?

I have dual tips flush with the body (actually cut the cladding to get them flush) exit right in front of the pass rear tire. No issues to speak of. 03 Silverado SS.

Sweet, sounds like I dont have anything to worry about. I'll adjust them tomorrow more to my liking.

Anyone had a different experience?

I have mine about a 1/4" or so away from my paint....anything closer to that will result in the paint bubbling off.
