Can 04 thermostat be moded to 160?
Just bought a new 04 Silverado. Tried installing the thermostat from my 99 Silverado on the 04 after doing the free mod to get it to open early (approx 175 according to a kitchen thermometer in a pot of water on the stove). It won't fit. The wings on old one that hold the guts of the thermostat in place are too far apart to allow it to fit in the hole in the water pump on the 04. GM has made the hole in the water pump slightly smaller and changed the thermostat so the old style thermostat won't go in. GM must be reading LS-1 Tech and decided to make this change to keep people from modifying their own thermostats for free. Can this "new" style thermostat be modified to get it to open sooner as is done to the old style? If not, can I just put the old water pump off of my 99 on the new 04 and use the 99 thermostat I modified on the old pump after installing it on the new truck? I have the old pump in the garage because I put on one of those fancy and EXPENSIVE electric Mezieres on my 99. The Meziere does work good and I drive that truck all the time and have taken it on long distance trips and the water temp rarely goes over 185 according to the temp gauge which is pretty accurate (When compared to my handheld scan tool value or AutoTap) unless I sit in heavy traffic on a hot day with the A/C turned "ON". Bottom line is I don't want to spend $50 on a 160 thermostat unless I have to.
