Default cam and torque converter

I was getting ready to pull the trigger on a cam but was told that a torque converter is necessary...is there any truth to that? I have a 09 Silverado with a 5.3 and the cam will be a 212 218 low lift cam from Texas speed

Necessary? no. Would you benefit from a higher stall speed absolutely. That is a baby cam for sure so a stall isn't necessary, but would make it a tad more fun.
