You can never go wrong with a 6.0. That being said, on a budget, there are some pretty cheap mods you can do to the tbi to make it run fairly respectable. Unlike the LS engines, there are a lot of bolt ons that free up a good amount of power.

If that truck were mine and wanted to keep the sbc, I'd do the following things w/o any internal mods...

-Clean up the tbi base with a dremel, or buy one already worked over
-tbi spacer, injector pod spacer, maybe some flow matched injectors
-Get a set of free flowing, smog headers and ypipe. A good flowing si/so muffler
*I ran edelbrock TES headers, they came with a ypipe.
-convert the fuel pressure regulator to adjustable - then bump the fuel pressure. Or you could buy one that is adjustable.
-Being its a 92, it would probably benefit from a billet distributor and an upgraded coil.
-bump the timing a few degrees
-4.3li torque converter
-bigger servo
-mail order chip from Wester's or PCMforless

Those mods wouldn't make it touch a gmt-400 xcab with a 6.0. But, it will be a nice running truck. And those mods are all do-able by someone who is mechanically inclined with a decent set of tools. And those mods would probably set you back less than $1,000.
