Question Cam Question???

My brother has a 2001 Z71. What would be the biggest most reliable cam he could use with a factory stall??? Also, his engine has 120K on it. Is it worth doing just a cam change at this time? What all should be changed out?
What brand?
Is there anyone that will swap his cam out that is reasonable?
How much would he be looking at spending:If we did it? Or a Shop did it?
He is having his tranny rebuilt a Century Transmissions next Monday.
Any advice would help.

Jim

with those miles i'd replace the oil pump and the timing chain also

you will need hardened pushrods or chromemoly ones along with ls6 springs(under .550 lift cams) or 918's for cams with over .550 lift

as far as whats the biggest with the stock stall, that depends. Some say 210/218's are fine. But my 4x4 lost some low end(not much). It screams above 3k though. I just ordered a yank3000 which was 200bucks off on sale. Install prices will vary. Most shops get 300-500bucks roughly. Its fairly simple to swap the cam. The oil pump, chain, and springs are the PITA

well on the trans work at century have them increase the stall on the stock converter, if he does that then i would go with the 212 218 cam, and yes replace the oil pump, chain, springs, rods, and pm lance (formally 02denali).

Unhappy

Guess we will be leaving it stock then. Didn't want to have to dig too far into the motor. My brother didn't want to do any kind of stall at all either.
Oh well, thought it could get by with just the cam, springs and pushrods. Guess not.
Thanks anyways.

u can, but while you are in their I would freshen the timing chain and oil pump.. the bigger cam is harder on those parts since you are revving faster. You could do the cam swap and make out fine. Or you oil pump might decide to crap out cause of the stress and their goes you whole bottom end when 200bucks for both woulda been safe insurance

yeah but wouldnt he loose more low end since those are all on 116ls1? I know the 00vette cam was 115.5LSA

The VHP 200/208 is a good lowend cam i think but i dunnp if the gains over stock are worth it?

Question

Want a cam that gives more lowend power, good mid and upper power, and better fuel miliage.
If we decided to do the cam, then what all is required to change the timing chain and oil pump? I would not want to have to get into something that would require a lot of disassembly or having to pull the engine up any.
The tranny will be on it when this is done as well.
How much money for the cam, springs, and pushrods?

I would do it right or dont bother. You are definatly gonna lose low end if you are using the stock converter. You would have to use such a light cam to be where you wanna be safley that you wont notice much if any increase at all. i think you will be wasting your time goin that route.
Good luck
