Default cam help

Ok guys please help me out here, im in the middle of my cam install and just
got done changing out the ls6 springs with 918. Now im ready to pull the cam from the block, I got to 5/16 dows from lowes shoved them in but i can still push the lifter back down on the cam. Doesnt seem like they do nothing. I dont have pen magnets should I get them or just spin it a yank it out and quickly install the new one?

I used dowels when I did my cam. I had a lifter slip past a dowel and partially block the cam bore. Fortunately, I was able to take a metal rod with a short 90 degree bend in it and tap the lifter back up into the bore. Obviously, I am not a fan of the dowel rod method. Next time I will be using pen magnets.

A good easy way to find out if the lifters will stay up is put pushrods in, but no rockers. Rotate the cam a few revolutions and you'll see all of the pushrods go up. If you can let them sit there and not move at all over several minutes you're good to go. The stock lifters in my truck stayed in the trays very well, most likely because I only had 34k miles on the truck.

I thought someone showed a picture of how the dowels didn't really retain the lifters, just a note those lifters trays were designed to keep the lifters up (even though some don't when they wear).

Cam is in, seems to be ok. I used the 5/16 rods but i can tell you the lifters can still fall
down. seems to pull pretty hard in the mid to upper range, waiting on tune from Allen for the cam change, hope runs even better after that.
