is it necessary to degree a cam in a daily driver??

No, you can buy them with the advance already ground into them.. IMO no you do not have to...

so say a 212/218 or a 220 cam just do a dot to dot?? which would you recommend? any major HP difference?

I went dot to dot with my 216/220. Runs just fine. Like John said, some of them have 2-4 degrees of advance in them anyway.
