cam choice for 03 tahoe
#1
I've been looking at cams for my 03 tahoe for a while now, and I think I've narrowed it down to the TR224 & XR275HR. Performance wise, all that I have is a K&N FIPK, TransGo hd2, and Nelson 93 hot tune. I'll be looking for a yank tt3000 soon, but I doubt I'll be able to do it when I cam it. Am I headed in the right direction? I don't want to go too big, but I do want to see a noticeable increase in torque. Is there another cam that you guys would recommend instead, and why?

That should do you good. You will need that stall in there!! If you dont go for a Nelson tune, since I see you are in KC, you could always hit up MC Racing or Supertune for a dyno tune. That cam might be much for what you want honestly. That thing will rip up dam high in the RPM's. Might want to stick to a bit lower duration cam if this is a daily driven truck. Comps 212/218 is availible in 2 lift versions. Either of those might be better suited to your truck. Or you could step it down from a TR224 to a TR220.

Driveability is a big concern.
I already have the Nelson tune, but I don't want to leave anything on the table. I'll have to talk to allen about my options.
So you guys think the 220 would be better?

I just put the TR224/112 in my 5.3. It is by no means a mild cam, but drivability should be good after I get it re-tuned on tuesday. Right now I'm shifting at 6000 and it wants to pull alot longer than that. It's lope sounds mean...that is if I can get it to idle right now it will idle in park if I'm lucky but otherwise I'm twofooting it around town. I'll report back to you after I get it tuned. Oh, and a stall is a must have for this cam.

Just dont over-cam it. You put a huge cam in a little motor its gonna pull to the moon. You dont want a 5.3 shifting at 7000 if you drive it daily. Dont buy a cam for the lope, you will regret it.
A tune on the dyno or out on the street is the way to get your tune spot on. You wont leave anything on the table.

Lope is the last thing I'm looking for from this swap. I thought the tghter LSA would keep the torque lower in the powerband, but I don't want alot of wasted topend that I will rarely take advantage of.
So, of the two Comp 212/218's, what are the advantages of the lower lift & 114 LSA vs the high lift & 115 LSA? I'm guessing the stock pushrods willl be fine with this combo? I do plan on using the 918 springs.
I think I just wasted $490 by having nelson tune it, instead of someone local.
