Default Cam is in and brought some ticking

212/218 high lift/springs Ti ret, harned rods.
new timing chain, pulley belt, gaskets etc..
stock oil pump on the motor with 54,000 miles, oring was fine.
stock heads,
AZ long tubes no cats -catback

I changed the oil at 100miles after the install and haven't brought it above 4000 rpms( hardley over 3000). I've got around 175 miles now and this morning after about 5 mins of driving around 70 I'm hearing rpm dependant ticking sounding like coming from both sides. Oil pressure 60-65

Its not an exhaust leak. It did go away after a few minutes but came back this afternoon. I'm hoping its still breaking in. Is this extra noise normal for the higher lift cam. I have read they call the ls1 sound like sewing machines.

Whats the worst case scenerio?
Lifters?

Thanks guys

High lift cam, beefier springs - yeah it'll sound like a sewing machine. Sounds normal for the most part, assuming everything was put back together right. I would have replaced that o-ring though - only because you removed it. Did you put in a new oil pump or chain? Can't see why you would otherwise mess with the o-ring. These cams don't need a break-in period.

Yep that noise is your valves closing. why were you taking it easy on a roller cam? Go out and run that thing hard like it is suppose to be run!

Yeah, don't baby it. Many LS1s see dyno time after a few minutes of warm up time with a new cam.

What length pushrods did you use?

Some light ticking would be normal with the higher spring pressures. If it sounds like there is something loose inside the valvecovers, thats not normal.

That noise is pretty normal. I notice that ticking sound when I am coasting.

With the higher lift the lifters are now going higher up in their bores. Untill they wear in (couple hundred miles) they can be noiser than usual.

Did you go with the same cam as mine and how do you like it so far?

212/218 557/562 at 114+4 not 115
T R 7.4 rods
comp springs

Install was done with a Friend who has his own shop. Not a race shop just a Old School good Mechanic.

I guess I'm babying it out of habit from all the other mods.

When we did the Tranny and Stall I was easy on it for a few and than with the rear same thing.

I'll have a full report on it in a few days.
Going to guy blast around today.

You do want the stall and gears to properly break in, so thats OK to be cautious. Just go have fun with the cam. You should be grinning from ear to ear with the new found power of the 99 stock cam. I gained 32 rwhp with the 01 LS6 cam. I bet you gain 40+ rwhp with that one, and have more torque than I did.

go wail on that thing, get us a report

i can hear my valvetrain all the time(232/230 595/590), nothing like piston slap, just that soothing sewing machine sound. i wonder what a 650+lift cam sounds like?
