Default Built N/A guys how long are your engines lasting

I am considering a 408 or possible a stroker. I was wondering how many miles you guys are putting down and how reliable they are. I would love a huge stroked out motor, but I am sure a 408 would suffice.
I would like to know how long your engines are lasting and under what conditions.

I've had motors that put out 1.6hp per cubic inch N/A last (currently) 140,000 miles. He tows alot with it AND its a Ford. Got another guy who's making 1.55 roughly and has almost 80K on it and does a ton of driving in Houston. Both are pump gas with 45 degree seats on the valve job, hydraulic rollers and radical cams. Nothing special.

Here's what will wear out fast- anything different than a 45 degree valve seat-
turning over 7,000 rpm-
not changing your oil-
not allowing 30 seconds to warm up the motor from a dead cold start-
improper clearances on building/assembly-
cheap parts.

You'd be suprised what "runs". 99% of the stuff in your engine "wears in" before it "wears out".

Edit: The ford guy has a 460 BBF making 750hp @ 6400rpm and 580ft lbs @ 4700rpm. At 2,000rpm, he has 480ft lbs and 430hp. Makes a great hot rod and one hell of a tow rig.

I would have to agree..it all depends on how "radical" you have it built, how it is maintained, and how youhave your clearances set.

The 383 I built has been running strong at 500rw for over five years of beating and daily driving. That motor is pretty "radical" for a street car. The 416 I built that made 575rw is still running strong after four years of beating and daily driving. I don't own either motors any more so I don't know how many miles they have on them. It is all in the build and usage. I wouldn't hesitate for a second building a strong NA motor and wringing it out every chance I got.

I was thinking of rebuilding my lq9 in my SS to a 408 using stock crank and rods just pistons and arp bolt kit, cam with specs close to 216/220 .560/.560lsa and ported 243 heads ls6 springs from TEA and a gm head gasket. Dropping it back into my bolt on SS silverado with 2600 stall, LSXRT intake 90mm TB, headers and exhaust.

I would love one of these I just don't see it lasting http://www.texas-speed.com/p-619-tsp...ort-block.aspx

that seems like a ridiculously small cam for a 408...

I wouldn't call that "built" or worry about longevity. That combo would run for ever and act like stock. The only problem is that you can't use your stock crank or rods to do a 408 and the cam is extreamly small. You would need to do a stroker package with 4.00" stroke crank and 6.125" rods. If you have TEA ported heads you are going to want a cam at a minimum, in the high 220's low 230's with over .600 lift to take advantage of the displacement and head flow. But even that would run like stock and run for ever.
