Default Broken Exhuast Manifold Bolt Removal?

Hi Everyone,

It appears I have the typical exhuast manifold bolt breaking off in the head malfunction. Four of them were that way before the manifolds were removed. It is at a local shop now, they have tried a variety of bolt extractors and 90 degree drilling, but nothing seems to work.

The problem is one is all the way in back near the firewall, making access to the broken bolt impossible. Is there anything we can try short of removing the head? The shop says it shouldn't leak with that missing bolt?

Thanks in advance!

Driver side? If so jack up or lift up. Remove tire & enter fender. Grab the welding machine (mig works best) build up the broken bolt till it's poking out the head a little then , weld a nut to that.. Let cool then try & back it out.. May take a couple of tries to get it..

Ok thanks! Yes driver side, the bolt is broken off flush with the head. They were hesitant to try with the aluminum heads.

I removed the rad support bolts and cab mounts, then jacked up the leftside for clearance. I used an angle grinder to drill a 1/8 hole in the bolt then used a dremel tool with an ext and a tungsten bit to split the bolt cleaned threads and has been fine since, good luck!!!!!!!!
