Default bought a 2500HD!

I seem to be moving down the year-models because I just bought an '02 2500HD GMC SLE today. LOL Just for grins, I figured I'd see where the 0% financing would put me over 60 mos. My '01 1500 GMC was financed at .9% over 48 months, so I was wanting to cut my monthly payment down over 60 months. Sure, I end up paying more over the life of the loan, but my goal is cash flow. I have a new business endeavor taking place, and less cash outflow per month is a good thing.

Now to the truck. These '02's have been selling like hotcakes! I could find crew cab Duramax's stickering for $43,000, and it was WAY more than I was looking to spend. I found a black '02 GMC ext. cab SB 2WD at Vista Ridge in Carrollton with the 6.0L and 4L80E, so I went to look at it. I also found a pewter Chevy 6.0L with LT trim (heated seats, leather, etc., but I like the black MUCH better), but I didn't like the look of it as much. The GMC styling and black paint make for a nice combo. It's a lot more truck than I'm used to driving! It sits so much higher up than my '01 1500, but the torque can really be felt down low. Add in the 4.10's, and it ought to pull a house. I'll find out tomorrow because I'm towing the SS to Lubbock.

Does anyone know what the stall is of the torque converter? It feels like it has a 2,800 stall in it! I haven't tried to brake-stall it since it has a scant 140 miles on it, but I'll try this next week. I haven't had much driving time in it since I took delivery of it at 6:30 this evening, but I can definitely say that I LOVE it! I'm really anxious to tow with it tomorrow, and I'm also curious about the gas mileage. What are you 6.0L guys averaging in town and on the highway when not towing? I'm expecting around 17 MPG on the highway and 13 or so in town. I figure I should be able to knock down 14 MPG or so towing 5,400# of car and trailer. I guess we'll see. I will really be glad to have this truck when I eventually step up to an enclosed trailer. The black paint will make it more maintenance, but it's worth it when you see it cleaned up! I'll try to get pics up sometime this week.

Congrats T on your new truck!
The Allison is a bad *** tranny but that option is mucho expensive, differance between that one and the 4L60E & 4L80E is towing capacity more then anything, plus it's a completly different design then the 4L trannys. Thats why you see them mostly optioned for the Duramax diesels.
I have no ideal what stall the converter is in the 4L60E, mine has the 4L80E and I still don't know what the stall is.
4.10's will hurt your mpg though but being that you got a wimpy 2WD HD model your milage will probably be close to what I get in my mighty 4x4 non HD 2500.
I have 3.73's, on the hwy I get about 16.7-17 mpg not towing and about 14-15 mpg in city driving. But only if I keep my foot out of it, if I don't, forget about any kind of good milage. LOL
Towing is a whole nother world though, the milage will drop considerably, when I tow it gets about 13 mpg, but that also depends on how heavy your foot is. But remember I have headers, ORP, flowdisaster muffler, superchips tuning, ASP pulley & K&N FIPK. All those mods increased my milage about 2 mpg from stock form.
Now being that you have 4.10's and a HD 2500 which is a 1 ton frame your beast is probably close to the same weight as mine, but you only have 2WD which is to your advantage for milage, your milage will most likely be a tad lower then my modified 2500 IMO.
Until you do some mods to let the motor breath your milage won't be to impressive I think.
So does this mean that your going to be needing one of those Corsa exhaust systems for the 6.0L now? Hmmmm, maybe you might lean on that guy at Corsa a little more heavily now to get him on the stick and get some of them produced for the 6.0L X-cab SB trucks like ours. HINT HINT!

Now on to more important things, like getting your but schooled in a little line em' up tow truck war grudge racing the friday before the shootout at NPR, there's a certian white 2500 6.0L that will be waiting on you, because that's all I got to race right now since my motor in the SS went KABOOM last wednesday.
Anyway, congrats again on your new truck, I know you love it cause I love mine!

Sounds just like what you need Trevor. I bet it will be a big benefit for towing your SS.

Don't tell me you left that Corsa system on your trade in. What are you gonna do with it?

Thanks for the in-depth reply Gordo! You'd better watch out because my HD will be HEAVILY modified with a UPD induction kit. We'll have to run 'em to see what difference the steeper gearing and 2WD makes. I'll just have to remember to leave on the 2nd yellow, not the third. LOL I'm really sorry to hear about your SS. And for it to happen just before the Thunder Shootout... The silver lining is that you'll end up with a quicker and faster beast. How many cubes can we expect, and will the solid-roller be larger than the newest one that went in recently?

BigTex - Yes, the Corsa catback went with the old truck. I made sure that it, along with the billet grille, was worked into the price of trade-in. Once I got the best price from them, then I told them they had to add in extra if they wanted the exhaust and grille. The salesman sure did whine a lot. I wasn't hell-bent on getting rid of the '01, so if the terms weren't what I was looking for I would've just gone home. They had to pay off my '01, and the appraisal vs. amount owed was slightly off. These incentives are great to buy, but they sure do suck for used car values. I went for the farm, so to speak, and ended up getting it.

Congrats Trevor! I love my '01 2500HD. I have the 6.0L and the 4.10 gears. I also have the UPD intake. I'm averaging around 13-14 unloaded and I towed my C5 up to Hallett and back, averaged over 80mph and got just under 11mpg. Not too bad as far as I was concerned. At 80mph it's about 2700-2800rpm.

P.S. Shoot me an e-mail. I got the 4.10's put in on the C5 and had a few questions. coreywells01@Hotmail.com We can talk about trucks too, You did get the 4L80E, right? It's a tough tranny. The 6.0L motor is bulletproof too.

Your 1500 would have towed just fine. I've got a good comparison for you. DJ99SS bought a 2wd 2500HD 6.0L and his SS weighs the same as mine. We both towed up to the SLP day event in Ennis, cruising 80-90 mph all the way up there. I used a little over a half tank (from Houston) and his used about a 1/4 tank more than mine. My truck had no problem hitting that damn 96 mph speed limiter in full tow

Corey - Yes, I do have the 4L80E. For some reason, I thought I had the 4L60E, but I climbed under it and it's NOT a 4L60E! I'm getting ready to e-mail ya.

Neil - LOL! Have you been talking to Jason? I bet I could win some money at the street races. hehe

Tony - I know that my 5.3L towed fine, but I still wanted more umph when towing. This truck is AWESOME to tow with! You don't have to worry with the squatting of the rear of the truck, the front of the trailer now is high enough for the SS' front clip to clear the ramps when getting on and off, and the truck hardly ever downshifts. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Like I said, I'll eventually end up with an enclosed trailer, and I KNOW that a 1/2-ton 5.3L will have issues with that. I know a few guys that tow 24' enclosed trailers with Tahoes and 1/2-ton trucks, and that is one major struggle. It can be done; it's just that I can do it easier with the new truck.

If you order the same truck with the LT package then the only available trans becomes the Allison.

Trust me, there's more to the Allison than just towing numbers. I own one, I know!

Congrats on the truck, Trevor!! John and I are DYING for a new HD truck. We can't decide whether to shop for a used '02 or '01 model NOW or wait till after the first of the year and see if we can afford a new one. We REALLY want a diesel/Allison crew cab dually, but we'll have to see what funds permit. Like you, we want to buy an enclosed trailer in the near future and even with an air bag system on the Sierra 1500, I don't see her being too happy pulling something so heavy.

You'll wring my neck for saying this, but we've actually also been drooling over a new 2003 Dodge dually with diesel/auto.

Anyway, can't wait to check out the new ride in Baton Rouge!
