Default Bolt On Mods - Fans

I just finished reading the thread on the bolt on mods, GREAT THREAD AND INFO BY THE WAY.
I had a couple of questions regarding 1) the electric fan conversion. I have a 2000 silverado 5.3 and was woundering what size and cfm fans should I use and also is having the pcm reprogrmed to turn them onor using a manual switch the only way to get themm to turn on. What I mean can they not be hooked up to a temp switch in a coolant jacket and turn on at say 180 f or so.

2) I would like to know more about buying the tuning program and tunig the pcm myself. Who is the best and the simplist to use.

Thanks for all the info in advance

Dave

For you fan question. They can be wired up however you desire. If you want to buy an external thermostatic controller to run them that will work. The cleanest and probably most widely used on here is to hook them in to the pcm and let the trucks computer control them (which requires tuning) or you can just run a manual switch and remember to pay attention to the gauge.

As for the software I like HPT, but as stated, for tuning GM's it is more about personal preference than anything.

Thanks for all the responces guys. I was just woundering how the pcm programmers work is it software that is used along with a laptop or is it a handheld programmer that you guys are using to reprogram your computers? You will have to excuse me Im some what new to all this computer controlled stuff. Im an old school mechanic for the most part I work on construction equipment for a living and they are for the most part still old school like me. OH YA and where can I purchase the stuff and how much if you know?

Thanks Guys

It is done with the tuning software...HPT or Efi can both turn on and adjust the fan temp settings.

They are both software programs the require a laptop to make changes to the operating parameters of the vehicle stored in the pcm.

The various handheld tuners are very generic, have very limited options and are way over priced. IMO.

Both programs can be bought directly through the manufacturer. Some of the sponsors are also retailers for one or the other. I believe Synergy sells HPT and Green Light Motor sports sells EFI. The first place to start would be at each companies website so you can get a feel for each program. Sponsor list is over there >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hp Tuners and EFI Live are both on it. While they are equally good for GM tuning there are some differences in them.

I think the interface for HPT is a little easier to follow than EFI as far as ease of use, but both will require a lot of reading to start off. There are many people on here or the respective company forums that can help you with either program if you have questions.
