Default BIG PROBLEM!

Well last saturday I put a custom cold air kit on my truck, everything went fine until I started up it and took it down the road for a test run well before I could even get on it, the engine just started this loud knock and screech, kinda like it threw a lifter. I turned around, being maybe 100yds away from the house and jumped out to listen. It was coming from the drivers side up by the head so I pulled in the garage and turned it off. After thinking it threw I figured maybe there was a piece of metal or screw in the airbox that got sucked up in the engine. I then pulled the spark plugs and stuck a magnet threw the last spark plug hole. Pulled it out and there was a bunch of metal shavings stuck to it and after getting them all out the end of the magnet fell off into the cylinder head! So now im preparing to just take the head off and go in but just to get it back together is going to be 200$. So I dont want to put it back together without doing some modification to the engine. Otherwise its a almost a waste of money. So my question is what could I do, and I mean anything goes, from heads cam, to bore and stroke, or even all four things, or just sell the engine and get a big block. I want the best bang for the buck. Is there anyone that has done any of these things to there truck. Also what could that have been in the engine? I need help here guys.

You didn't leave anything laying in the intake track when you buttoned up the cold air system did you?

Seriously though, maybe something got into the intake tube while you had it apart and got into the motor. I'm not sure what the metal shavings could be, they really could be just about anything.

What do you want to do and how much are you willing to spend on your truck? That should help you decide what to do.

You could have your stock crank offset ground and the bore opened up a little for a few extra cheap cubic inches. Then throw a nice cam and set of ported heads on top for a nice increase in power.

Good luck

Well, if it was a bolt or something semi-large, I would expect to see damage to the heads in some way. Even if it were a small object, if it got between the valve and the seat, you will need some head work. What were the shavings like? The heads are aluminum, and last time I checked, you couldn't pick up aluminum w/ a magnet. Be prepared for some down time. You should probably make room in your garage, pull the heads, and check out the damage. Pull that side first, as you may find that you dont want to pull the other (gasket and bolts aren't cheap).

My guess is you will need head work at a minimum, possibly a new head. You should look for any scarring of the cylinder as well.

You don't really need the heads off to install a cam, but it won't hurt. Minimum, I would do a cam. If you have to pull the engine, then think about other options (bore, stroke, 6 Liter, etc...) Ported heads are expensive, and will take time to get. Bore is cheaper than a new stroked crank. You may need to get it bored to fix any damage in that cylinder anyway. Don't know for sure, but you may be able to bore it out to the LS1 diameter, and use some stock LS1 pistons. Crank and rods are the same for LS1 and LM7. Then get a set of used LS1 heads (less than $250) instead of fixing your 5.3 heads.

It isn't under warranty is it?

Dude, that sucks. Change it to a 6.0 and get the caddy heads, thatll give ya a 345 hhp motor for not alot of green. Is it just me, or is it once you modify something, something allways wants to go wrong.

Krazy J, MTI is in the progress of opening up a new Sport Truck division and they will be building motors for our trucks. You might want to contact them about some options since you are local.

Well, Ilike the idea of making it a 6.0 and then getting the caddy heads, cause ill probaly have to bore it anyway. As fare as the warrenty goes I have 37K miles and it went out at 36K. Maybe there was something left in the Intake, dont know, when I get off work I'm taking the head off tonight and then it will be easier to tell.
Hey nineball, mmiller told me as well about MTI and I keep meaning to give them a call, but its hard to find time. I really am not to worried about money, because I just want to go back together the way I want it and to do that it has to be in atleast the 12's.

Greg, its no secret now. Go to MTI and take a look. They created a new entry door specifically for the Sport Truck Division, and above the different doors it now reads "Sports Car Division" and "Sport Truck Division".

The new showroom/counter is also built, just waiting on displays and such.
