Default BB or turbo or super charger on 96 K1500

been planning a BB swap for a little while but am now considering other options after installing the 0411.

My goal is to increase towing ability and all around drive-ability not a performance truck (its my daily driver).

Its got a 5.0 with 200000 miles on the clock, its been very well maintained, everything works and the truck is in very good shape. No ticks, knocks and does not burn any oil, I use amsoil and do 1 year oil changes, I don't have to add oil between oil changes. The oil level drops about 1/4" over the year time frame (a couple of small oil leaks I intend to fix soon).

what are your opinions on the different options?????????????????

Neal

My vote is a 383 with a mild cam, marine intake and headers. Stock fuel injectors won't support much power and honestly see the stock 305 blowing up with the stress of towing with boost. 4L60E won't like it much either.

Don't waste your time trying to fix the oil leaks or building something else.

Technology is your friend, you're halfway there with the 411 swap any way.

Stay traditional small block and use the marine intake. Much simpler and more low-midrange torque with the 383 than a 6.0L could ever dream of making.

appreciate the input

I was looking at the 8100 vortec also but there is limited info on the internet for this swap. I did read somewhere that the oil pan interferes with the frame rail so that has me rethinking my options.

I like the 6.0 and its availability but thought the 7400 vortec would a little easier to swap in since it came from that year model (2500HD) and the wiring may be a little easier to work through.

Fasr355 was hoping to start with something I could pull straight from the bone yard and stick in the truck.

Heck with the 0411 installed it shouldn't be that hard to put the turbos on the 7400 and get it tuned.

Been looking for info on the 80e upgrade for the GMT400 K series truck but have not been able to find the pertinent stuff like will it mate to the current transfer case? What mods will it take to make it work with my manual shift transfer case? After looking around I thought it may be easier to have a purpose built 60e instead.

I have an 8.1 to put into my Express van but the engine has to move to the right and rear on new mounts and I have to put the larger engine cover and opening into the floor/firewall for it to fit.

If you do an 8.1 swap they fit on the traditional big block frame mounts. Get an engine from a van and all your accessories will end up in the factory location.

I have a 425 hp Mercruiser cam to put into my 8.1. Makes the 8.1 put out 520 tq @ 3,600 and 425 hp at 5,000.

My 80E swap in the Express was 2wd, couldn't help you on the transfer case stuff.

local salvage yard has a 2001 van with the 8100 in it, ready to pull for $1200 and like you said it has the correct brackets with AC and Alt in the correct spot for my truck.

Being a 1500 what I've read is the oil pan will hit the front cross member along with some exhaust manifold issues with the frame but headers should fix that issue.

Looking over my options the 7400 would be a little easier to install than the 8100.
