ASP alternator pulley/ belt problem
#1
I put the pulleys on late last week without to many problems. Now I have one. The belt is squeeling, BAD! I have rubber dust and rubber chunks all over under my hood. The belt is the one its suppose to be. The alternator is good. Anyone run into this before? How did you fix it?

I had the same problem plastic chunks and everything. I sent the alt pulley back to asp and they sent me a new one back. It does the same thing. I have the stock one on right now. I went out and spent $60 on a gatorback belt and after a month it started squealing too. I'm at a loss.

It looks like the alt pulley is to narrow or something. But I cant just get rid of it and put on the stocker. I need the amps for a fan set up.

I'm running e-fans + 2 amps. Before I upgraded to the 130amp alt I was doing ok with the draw. I'm running a 160 degree stat so I don't have to run my fans unless I'm at a dead stop with the a/c on in the middle of the day. I did notice that when I installed the new alternator the belt was a little tighter. I'm going home this afternoon and put the asp pulley back on and see what happens. I'll post on what I find out.

Here is a reply, including my original one, I got back from asp this morning:
I have no idea. Send back the asp alt pulleys but you are going to have to run the stock alt pulley. The only thing I can think of is GM changed the stock dia and now the belt we call out is too long.

I sent the original one back in and received the replacement. It is doing the same thing. I have a friend of mine that has the just bought pulleys for his 01 GMC Sierra and he is having the same problems as I do rubber shavings and squealing. I have the stock alt pulley on there right now with no problems. What to do?

Hi,
I purchased a set of your pulleys through Tbyrnemotorsports about 2 months ago. 3 days after installing the crank and alternator pulleys on my 2001 GMC Sierra with the 5.3liter engine I noticed some belt squeal. I sprayed some belt dressing on the belt and it seemed to quiet the belt down. The belts were the ones supplied with the pulleys. After a couple of weeks of light squeal it started getting louder so I popped the hood and found fine rubber shavings stuck all over my alternator. Thinking the belt was bad I picked up a Gatorback belt $40 which I was told do not squeal. Well 3 weeks later it started squealing and when I popped the hood I found again the rubber shavings stuck to my alternator. Since I have put the stock pulley back on with the gatorback belt and have had no squeal or rubber shavings. Would it be possible for me to get a replacement pulley and send the one that I have back? Tom at tbyrne was the person that referred me to you.
Thanks for any help in this situation,
Larry Cothren

Just a thought...Make sure your crank pulley is installed onto the crank all the way. If it is sticking out, the belt will not line up with the rest of the pulleys and will wear very quickly and you will see rubber dust on your accessories from the belt being misalligned. An easy way to check this is to get a straight edge and place it on the outer ring of the crank pulley and onto another pulley. If the straightedge looks like it is tilted, then things aren't lined up.

Yes. I'm running the asp belt with the stock pulley with no problem. The stock belt wouldn't fit I tried.
Ryan I would assume if they weren't lined up the other accessories would have the plastic dust. On mine it was just on the alternator. The asp belt was rubbing in the same place on the tentioner pulley according to the previous ware marks.
I'll find out tonight if all it needs is a little smaller belt. With the new alternator it sucked up the asp belt a little tighter.

Does the alternator pulley rub or is it out of alignment?Autozone carries Gatorback belts a lot cheaper than $60 and keep the receipt they will warranty them for 90 days.If the pulley is rubbing you might shim the pulley.
