Default Aftermarket Cold air Intake Question

Hiya,

For you guys with the aftermarket cold air intakes...

Do you get alot of engine hum after removing the stock air box, and putting in an aftermarket tube and box?

I took the baffling out of my stocker..and removed the void box.
I did everything here, except I did not cut my box. http://www.sshotrods.com/fullsize/99up/airbox/

I got a horrible acoustical howl and vibration I could feel clear to my seat!
Not only did I get a horrible low tone howl and vibration, my gas mileage went seriously in the ditch, and throttle response was horrible.
(For us old school people - it sounded like I had a 1000cfm Holley Dominator on a 305 - bog bog bog)

I know the aftermarket stuff is expensive... so how do they handle the acoustics? Or is it just the nature of the performance upgrade?

I have the K&n FIPK and I sounds like stock, slightly noticable gains, no problems with it.

On my Volant kit I got a slight drone or roar that starts at about 2200rpm and goes through 2500. I like the sound though; it only does is if you are really getting on it. I am running the Volant box with the stock air tube right now and all the noise is gone...

When I put my K&N fipk on I had stock exhaust and I could hear it making a pretty loud sucking noise under hard throttle, since I got the exhaust I can't hardly hear it anymore.

if your stressing about the price.. i'd buy a little cheap kit from ebay with just the cone filter and heat sheild... make sure its an airaid or k&n filter tho.. those kits are all over the place for like $40-$65... than get a airaid MIT tube for like $90 or find a good used one. What year truck is this for?

Cheap (except for the Stainles Filter) - $22 in elbows and clamps $52 BLitZ 4" stainless Steel Filter

Effective - 12-14 Hp fairly consistently with about 10 lb-ft

No howl - some more noise but nowhere near annoying.

[QUOTE=TrickyTransAm]the void box.

hey man i speak redneck, is that the ******* looking thingy? cuz i think if you cut anyones void box off they'd be howling....but seriously, it may not be sealed good where you cut causing an air leak after the maf sensor. so more air is going into the engine than the maf is reading. dont know a lot about the mafs and stuff, but its just a thought
