A Meaty Small Block... 383 With The Right Heads... A Good Midrange Intake And A 850-950 Demon Will Get You Close.... But Everythings Gotta Be Matched Up...

And If Your Planning On Running 12's You Better Have Some Good Gearing... Id Say 4.10 Or 4.56 A Solid Tranny With A Heavy Shift Kit In It. A Decent Stall And Some Luck... And He Could Be Deep Into 12's

Thats Pending Of Course He Doesnt Melt The Hides Off The Line

I don't know about any other hypers, but KBs kick *** and I would buy them over TRWs any day of the week. If you are going forged my opinion is to spend a little more and get SRP, JE, Wiseco, etc... Check out the LT1 guys over on camaroz28.com running KBs in 500+HP 383s.

Vortec heads are certainly something to consider. I haven't been too interested in them since aluminum heads are pretty reasonable. I didn't even think of the ignition but an HEI is definitely the way to go and you can't go wrong with MSD.

Anywho, lots of information here for Dry_Kill's friend to consider.
I have hypers in my current 383 and my engines from now on will have forged. Its worth the money to go forged on that part IMO.

Best bang for the buck would be a set of forged TRWs. Shoot for around a 11:1 cr. A SCAT cast steel crank ($269~) is a good part. It's what I'm running for now as a matter of fact. Next, I would look at the vortec top-end kits from SDPC.com. Go with a 1-inch carb spacer and an 850 dp holley. Atleast a good HEI distributor, I run all MSD parts. Then a set of cheap 1 5/8 headers will do just fine.

For the tranny get a 3000-4000 verter, get the th350 rebuilt that is already in it, and you will need a tranny cooler! Out back that 10-bolt will last for now. So I'd just install a full spool (does fine on the street) with a set of 4.10s and a 28" tall ET street.

You'll be at 12.80s trapping about 103-106. Good luck!

Here is link to a site for my truck...67 Chevy
Very good info here. However, IMO, with a daily driver truck, I would perfer a 10:1 so you can run 89 octane with less timing and a 750 carb instead of a 850.

Its possible like Bluecajun said 383 stroker small block Aluminum heads port/polished + CompCams Magnum Cam or custom grind + Victor Jr intake + Holley double pumper + fully bolt-on.

As for the transmission Built THM-350 or 400 with 2800-3000 stall or 700R4/4L60 with 3400 stall and for gearing 3.73/3.90/4.10s

He shouldn't need to p&p the heads. I'm running AFR 190s out of the box and they do great. I also really like the Edelbrock 200 E-tec heads (aluminum vortecs). They are cheaper than the AFRs too. I think the RPM Air-gap intake would be the better choice on a truck. The torque curve is lower...

Hey guys kind of new to the site, I am dry_kills friend. All this info is very helpful and it seems that I am going to go with the 383 and really good matching parts. Any good companies/people that I should speak with on making sure that all parts match bc I know for a fact that if the parts dont all work together it will a be a waste of $$$.

12's should be easy.

i have a 83 chevy, i'm at 13.5 with it now and i would say it's very mild. it's a 2wd shortbed. with half tank of gas it only weighs 3750lbs. i have a 91 350 block out of a caprice police car, i added vortec heads and a performer rpm intake. i used a stock lt1 roller cam out of a 94 transam. that's it for the motor. the tranny is a th350 with a tci 3500 stall convertor. the truck runs 3.42 gears and 28" tall tire.

i would say if i did roller rockers and a nice sized cam i could probably touch 12's. i'll never know though, i'm selling the motor and dropping in a gen3 motor

If this kit from Edelbrock was around when I started my engine build, I may have bought it. It should work very well with a good tranny, stall, gears and tire.

Edelbrock Top-End Kit
