I got a 383 for my 1984 K-10 from here. http://www.sehrpower.com/
Its fully balanced and I opted for the Sportsman II heads.
If he has lots of money to spend he could get a small block 427. I always wanted to build one of those. Incase you are wondering, Yes I do mean small block. World products makes the block.

383, dual quads, longtubes, WILD cam, 4.11 gears, lightweight driveshaft, weight reduction, and a badass stall.....

406ci, 383ci, or 355ci, 0 deck the block, good flat tops, Nice rods, good crank, Trick Flow heads, Victor jr., 800ish cfm carb, 240ish/250ish solid roller with about .630 lift on about a 108LSA.
TH350 built good, 3500-4000 stall (more like 4000), 4.10's or 4.30's.

NO kidding, I am definantly taking notes! all I have is MSD ignition, flowmasters and a transmission kit
I got smoked the other day by some guy in a Mustang, it sucked...
We were already going 70 so its not like I had much more, it would have been better from 0 to 100+
but yeah good information

There is some good info and some bad info in this thread. He will not need a BBC or any type of boost or nitrous. Go with a 383. Do not buy hyper. pistons. Best bang for the buck would be a set of forged TRWs. Shoot for around a 11:1 cr. A SCAT cast steel crank ($269~) is a good part. It's what I'm running for now as a matter of fact. Next, I would look at the vortec top-end kits from SDPC.com. Go with a 1-inch carb spacer and an 850 dp holley. Atleast a good HEI distributor, I run all MSD parts. Then a set of cheap 1 5/8 headers will do just fine.
For the tranny get a 3000-4000 verter, get the th350 rebuilt that is already in it, and you will need a tranny cooler! Out back that 10-bolt will last for now. So I'd just install a full spool (does fine on the street) with a set of 4.10s and a 28" tall ET street.
You'll be at 12.80s trapping about 103-106. Good luck!

Vortec heads are certainly something to consider. I haven't been too interested in them since aluminum heads are pretty reasonable. I didn't even think of the ignition but an HEI is definitely the way to go and you can't go wrong with MSD.
Anywho, lots of information here for Dry_Kill's friend to consider.
