Hello guys,
I'm new here, I've been lurking for a while and have gleaned some great info from this site. I know much of the questions I'm about to ask have been asked a million times, but I'd like to know how some of these modifications will impact my emissisons on my '05 silverado 1500. I live in california and the emission police are out! I had to smog my wife's 10 year old VW diesel for the first time the other day. I'm not looking to build a race truck, but I'd like to improve my truck's performance and driveability. I anyone has any frirst hand experience or recommendations, please chime in.
here's what I want to do (in order):
1. ebay OBX style long tube headers with a Banks single 3" monster exhaust.
2. Cold Air Intake, I like the Banks, but not sure if I want to pony up that much $$.
3. TBSS manifold and throttle body (can I use my stock throttle body, or does that defeat the point?)
4. corvette servo in trans.
5. custom tune on the PCM
6. I'd like to put a mild stall converter but I'm not sure if I want to pull the tranny.
these mods seem pretty safe and straight forward. Has anyone had negative experience with trying to get smogged?
Here are other mods I'm on the fence on:
5. Underdrive crank pulley. Do these actually help, will I lose cooling, charging?
6. porting throttle body. It seems that the general concensus is to just leave this alone.
7. Throttle body spacer.paperweight?
8. ratio rockers or cam? I think this is where the point of no return is once I get into internal mods. removing bolt ons is fairly easy if something doesn't pass smog.
9. Shift kit, don't know If I want to remove and open up the trans.
Thanks in advance for the advice!

1. Good Bargain hard to beat..weld your oe cats to the y pipe for smog
2. Dont spend too much here..a basic cai is fine
3.Only if you do a cam would I personally..If you have a cablr tb then get a 90mm dbc If you have a dbw than you need an x-link..yes it defeats the purpose
4. Good mod
5. I recomend Blackbear
6. Go for a circle d tb stall
5. Evey little bit helps..may need 145 a alt if you have a system
6. Better throttle response..I have one
7. Yes, waste of money..now a Tornado on the other hand lol
8. Definately a cam if you want SOTP difference in power..I have a CA smog cam with 218 duration and .560 lift with -16 overlap and easily passed in a 5.3 (its actually for sale) OE rockers are fine
9. Do it while you do the servo/torque converter..very good sotp's mods
I live in SD and have passed smog with lt's and cam..just gotta make sure the visual passes

2.I modified a Spectre Cold Air intake only cost me about 115 with everything
3. Only if you were doing a cam
4. Yes in the Servo, Did mie with my Shift kit (myself in my driveway)
5. Blackbear is awesome.
6. Stall would definitely wake the truck up, Still running a stocker in mine, looking to do gears for now.
5. Underdrive crank pulley. Debating this myself.
6. Porting throttle body. Couldn't hurt performance, Gains are minimal if anything.
7. Throttle body spacer: Waste
8. A cam would definitely help in the power department, Many people passing smog with cam'd trucks.
9. Shift kit: Did mine myself in my driveway over a weekend not too difficult.

Period, As long as you dont make noise your golden. Run a quiet muffler like stock or ones close to stock. And get a cutout for when its time to be loud. And Have someone "smog" it for you..

It is made by Comp Cams and is custom spec'd..99% of cams are going to require upgraded valve springs to handle the extra lift..Maybe a .510 lift or below, but I would still throw some yellow z06 springs for good measure, which can be had for less than $75.......

Only other thing I can think of that would help you if you installed a cam would be Comp's Trunion upgrade for the stock rockers. That'll keep you from tearing down later in the case of needle bearings "leaving" their home. Might as well while you're in there, it's one of those things.
