Default ??? About electric fans...

I have come across 2, LT1 Z28 fans(free) and I thought about installing them in the truck. BUT they have no shroud anymore and no thermo switch. I want to install them to run automatically at say, 190 degrees so I need some sort of aftermarket thermo switch. Now the questions:

1) Can I just mount the 2 diagnally on the radiator without any type of shroud and get good cooling in traffic?

2) What kind of thermo-switch do I need to set them up to come on at a pre-set temp? Where do we install the thermo-switch, in the head/water pump somewhere or the radiator? Newbie quetions I know but wondering if its worth the trouble. I live in Houston where its hot and humid and I pull motorcycle trailers often.

3) How much HP gain is in ditching the stock fan? I spun the fan today when cold and hot, the clutch feels pretty loose. I couldn't see the fan killing THAT much power put I am not sure. Maybe the HP gain is in better cooling with the E fans.

Hey dude I just put LS1 fans in last week so I can help you. Mine did not have a shroud just the fan housing, I don't know if they come with a shroud but anyway I went Advance Auto Parts and got a Hayden Fan control kit. It has this brass pole thing that you push through the radiator, but make sure it is touching one of the coolant tubes or it won't work. Then this plug thing screws in the other side and holds it secure in place. Then you hook a 12v key-on wire onto the rod, and hook the rest of the wiring harness up to the AC Clutch, both fans, other rod plug, battery, and ground everything good. I have the unmodified tstat and I stay at about 200-205 even if I leave the truck sitting for as long as I want. The Hayden kit I got makes the fans come on at 195* and go off at 165*, but thats the radiator temps not the internal engine temps. Hope this was not to confusing, the kit was $25 and has good instructions, was easy to hook up, the hard part was getting the clutch fan off, I went to the body shot and borrowed their tool. I noticed a difference in power, more than I thought I would. It is for sure worth the $125 or so and couple hours of work. Good luck dude.

Hey, thanks for the reply, that was exactly what I needed to know. I was thinking about just running the fans to the key on and letting them stay on all the time but thats really a lot of extra run time that the fans don't need to be on. I wonder if Hayden makes a switch to turn them on at 180 degrees? Anyway, thanks again.

I got the exact wiring kit CDH got the first time. I had problems with it and went with an adjustable kit which was about $25 also. Got both at Advance Auto Parts.

That's where I got mine. They didn't bother to tell me they had an adjustable kit, those b@#$%*ds!!! I guess I am screwed when I do the free Tstat mod. Randy what kind of problems did you have with this kit? And SportVortech if you are reading this, I wanted to let you know I can't make it on the 14th. I am sorry, don't think I am backing out because I'm lazy, just something else came up and I need the $$$. I am going to a track in a couple weeks, I will let you know my times, but I have an open diff still so they will probably suck.

After punching the probe through the radiator and getting everything ready, it just did not work. I had power to the probe from my switched source, but it never (no matter how hot it got) completed the circuit and sent power to the output terminal. I went back to get another kit like the first one and looked on the shelf and low and behold there was an adjustable one that I must have overlooked the first time. I am happy with how it is working so far, but I do have a manual override switch in the cab (I used the lead the instructions said to hook into an A/C hot wire).

Good luck
