So is what Low said correct? Is the 00 cam updated already? Anyone know the lift of the 00 5.3? What years would be the best with fewer mods like springs? All that would be needed is a Crank Pulley bolt right if you do it without taking the valve cover gaskets off?

Yes cam LSA changed in 00 from 99. That's it. Remember 99's are SEVERLY detuned from their 00+ counterparts. I'd lay money that the tuning gained most of the power changes between 99 and 00...

All the F-bod cams will be okay with stock springs too.

you'll still have to remove the valve covers and loosen the rockers in order to change the cam.
I also recommend an oil pump if your're already in there and you have around 80K miles.
The 5.3 isn't cam isn't the same as the ls1, the ls1 has a higher lift.

later,

Thanks allen and hitman, yeah I would have realized that once I got into it, my mistake. I have done h&c's on cams and vettes before, just been awhile. Would the low end suffer much? Since my truck is a 4x4 I don't want to lose low end atleast till I get a converter. So what would be the best years or best cam in general with minor additions like springs. Just want the easiest hp boost I can get right now.

Hitman seems like he's going with the '00 ls1 cam, so that'll be a nice comparison for you.
On the 5.3 we didn't feel any loss in lowend, it smoke the tires much better.

Yeah I am gonna do the '00 F-bod cam. It's the .500" lift one that's about 197/208 duration. That cam in the 5.3 will be like sticking a Z06 cam in an F-bod for a comparison...going to give a better top end pull.

I got that other dyno sheet of the stock 4.8/5.3 on a dyno and the stock cam begins to drop what looks like to me is around 5200rpms...the F-bod cam pulls to about 5600rpms (then flattens out) in the 5.7 so in the 4.8/5.3 I can see it pulling to 6000rpms easily (cubes eat cams).

I'd bet you could just toss it in and run it. But to max out any thing you do, a tune is SO worth it.

I am guessing a 00 SS cam won't work right? With stock springs that is?
