Default 99 5.3L to a 06 5.3L

I have a guy that called me today that changed his 5.3L in his 99 Silverado.
He installed a 06 model.
He says that it's running like crap.
Does the 06 model has the same crank gear 24 tooth as the older model,or it would be a 58 tooth ?
I know their a year that they changed,the LS2 model for sure,but wondering if it would include the LS1 5.3L 2006 ?

Thanks in advance.
Ron

Same thing. What exactly did he swap?

I'm betting he forgot to plug something in. I also know that the 99's had smaller injectors, tell him to get a tune with an 02 OS

99's had the 19#'ers. Would that really make it run like crap? Assuming it was a stock for stock swap? Agreed on getting the tune for the 02 OS. Wondering if it even has a tune at the moment? That would make it run like crap.

Yep,you are correct. 99 to 06 runs the 24 tooth.Marty at SDPC was nice enough to e-mail me the info.

From what I'm told,he changed the cam,and planed the heads a bit.
I'll have to find out what he did with the injectors then,I did not know that the 99 model had even smaller injectors that the 02-06 has.

They did try to tune it,but anything over half throttle,it would spark knock bad. They even lowered the timing table down to single digits and still is not working 100%.

Thanks again for the info.

If he milled the heads and doesnt have the correct length pushrods itll cause it to run like ****. Just sayin it could be checked. Its easier to go back and check work thats already done.

Exactly, if the pushrods are too long the valves aren't closing all the way. Even .005" of valve sticking open will cause compression loss and / or foul the intake air charge. Kind of like a VERY BAD EGR condition. Plus it's allowing most of the pressure to release from the cylinder upon combustion rather than pushing the piston down the cylinder. You nee to check for pushrod length.

You do realize that the lifter can accommodate varying length's of pushrods, correct? Pushrods aren't even close to the issue here. It's just a bad tune and as already pointed out, possibly an injector issue which would throw everything off.

The only reason I threw that out there is because a guy here locally just ran into that with his Trans Am. Didnt know his heads had been milled to the extent they were and it ran like ****. Correct length pushrods and it runs like a champ. Without knowing how much the guy with the 5.3 had milled off the head I just suggested that to be checked simply as a precaution. I agree that tuning would be an issue but it never hurts to double check things.
