x...I've seen several trucks with an x on the 8th digit too. They are also 4.3s.

In '03 GM switched the L35 4.3 VIN designation to "X" in all models (S-Series, FS, etc.). Something about the FI system being changed slightly. Same HP/TQ ratings as previous "W" motors.

From my '03 Silverado Owner's Manual :

W = Vortec 4300 V6
V = Vortec 4800 V8
T = Vortec 5300 V8
U = Vortec 6000 V8 ( 300 HP)
N = Vortec 6000 V8
G = Vortec 8100 V8
