8.1L no start? suggestions?

So my suburban will not start.
Turned the key it cranked and cranked and cranked... then fired but sounded like it was on 4 cylinders, then died.. Tried to fire it again nothing happend then the battery went dead... old battery needed a new for long time.
So i got a new battery. Crankes it over like a pro but no fire... figured the wife drove it last so maybe its out of gas( the gauge doesent work).
Put 5 gallons in nada...
So where do i start to look for a problem, or is it easier to just have it towed in and let some one fix it. I dont have a lift and it like *28 out side.
On a side note i cant hear the fuel pump click on. One of the local dealer said you cant hear a fuel pump. However on mine you use to hear something every now and then turning on and off. I thought it was the airride crap but its a 2500 sububran so i have leaf springs.

+1 for a bad fuel pump
You should hear the fuel pump prime itself when you turn the key to run. Try wrapping on the bottom of the fuel tank with a rubber mallet while someone is cranking the truck over, that works many times when a fuel pump is DOA.

9 times outta 10 if it is your fuel pump you'll get a little extra life out of it that way. or, and i don't really recommend it but i've done it before, spray some starting fluid in your intake and that'll prime your fuel pump when you start it. but do that at your own risk. i did that in this 97 jimmy i used to have for like a month while i was too cheap on time and money for a fuel pump. but pound on the tank first.

Might be a bad Crankshaft Position Sensor. Very common for them to die in older 8.1's. Pain in the *** the replace too. It's stuck between the firewall and back of the driver-side head. There may be a recall on it:
