Default 6.0 needs more towing grunt

With a new boat behind, my 01 2500HD CC SB cannot keep up with traffic on hills here in SW Virginia. Adding crew and gear, we are over 9000# payload. Engine and tranny temps look good, even climbing at or near redline; likewise, she keeps excellent oil pressure and shows no signs of weakness.

I've looked around on the 'net, and IMO the best solution would be a Whipple kit. Notice that some here have dissed the Whipple "tune".

Suggestions for more grunt for this truck? I don't care about hot-rodding the truck; I just want to go 70-75 up hills without having to spin 5100 rpm to do it.

Will the Whipple kit get this job done? If the kit just needs a better tune, can anyone recommend a shop here in VA that can help?

Other options?

tia

i would stay away from them all togehter. look at a radix if you have the loot for one. i believe it builds boost from the bottom up. check this link out http://www.magnacharger.com/gmtruckradix.htm then there is the vortech http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/products/systems/

My first 6 liter was a stock salvage yard motor with stock cam, exhaust manifolds, etc. I had nothing but a cat back exhaust (still had cats) ,42lb injectors and a custom tune and that is it, stock tq converter etc etc. It made 383 horsepower and 450 ft lbs in that trim. The original intent for my truck was to use it to tow and when it was like I just described it was awesome for pulling hills, etc.

So, the question is, would 450 ft lbs be enough to do what you want? The Radix is intercooled so you might want to give it a close look, but it is my opinion that to do what you are asking, you need forced induction of some sort.

I agree...

Either the STS Turbo or the Radix will get the job done. Might wanna hit up Jerry2500 for STS ideas as he LOVES his in his HD 6.0L for towing his big *** 5th wheel.. He added a small intercooler for cheap too.

I'd suggest a Radix....On my SSS with the 6.0L I had a Radix, I could pull anything...(Up to 6 quads on steel trailer or 25' Baja) no problems!

It felt like you did not know they were back there, great TQ.....

So the Radix uses the same blower as the Whipple but also includes i/c? Does the Radix also do away with the stock intake manifold? I seem to recall hearing horror stories about coolant leaks in GM intake manifolds. Guess that could be a bigger problem with FI.

The RADIX and Whipple are totally different. Whipple was a mediocre product 3 years ago until the RADIX came out. The Whipple is a Whipple blower, and the RADIX is an Eaton blower. The RADIX replaces the whole intake on the top of the motor, adds an in line fuel pump, and an intercooler. Very simple setup and effecient. You would have one hell of a puller with the RADIX on there. I would also suggest some headers (anything but shorties), and a small cam to really get that thing making some serious power.

I towed a 13K trailer 18K miles last summer in a 2003 2500 HD with the 6.0L and our Radix System. Got 11MPG, and never slowed down for a hill......Even in the Rockies.

For a complete ready to run kit, I would have Magnacharger's RADIX; especially for towing.

if it is bone stock 6.0 I would first try a set of headers ( long tube ) and a custom tune.
you should see on that 6.0 about a 45 to 50 horse increase in hp and toque.
you will notice a big difference, if you need allot more then go for the supercharger.
