I agree a 2300 would be optimal for a 408 (I bought a 2300 for my 408)

If you want to stay on the cheaper side a 383/1900 would be a fun ride. Better on gas too.

If you want to stay super cheap, swap in a LQ4 and throw 10psi at it with your 1900. Big TQ increase from a 5.3 to 6.0. (add small cam while it's on the stand) That's a cammed, boosted, tuned, 6.0 for less than the price of the 408 short block
Yea, and it was great. 408, 11:1 cr, stockish 317 heads, 218/230 cam, and a tvs1900 with a 2.8 pulley made 600hp and torque out the *** instantly. I wouldnt try that high of a compression ratio with more than the ~8lbs I was running though.

If you want a big engine, I would contact a shop like HKE, LME, ASP, TSP, TR, etc. and see what they say...dont even try a 5.3 to that many cubes.

You could always just boost the 5.3 and give it hell...mitch made close to 800hp and 1000rwtq with twins on his 5.3

If I was in your situation, and could do it over myself, if u want to be around the 500hp mark I would just do heads, cam, and boost it...these stock lower ends can take a beating, and drivability and gas milage won't go totally to ****.
