5.3 with throttle by wire???
#1
I have heard mis-matched information about the throttle by wire 5.3's. Does anyone know when this started, I heard 2003 and someone else said 2001?? I am trying to put one in my 1968 truck, can I just get a TB with a throttle by cable and eliminate the electronic crap?
Thanks in advance,
Taylor

2003 they started in all trucks. If the earlier models had traction control option, they had electronic TB's too. I don't see why you couldn't but you would need to get the PCM and cruise for that application.

so if it had traction control then it could have had it before 2003 right? Because this guy is telling me the motor is a 2001 but it has TBW. Are there any numbers I can run off the block or heads to determine the year of the motor?
Thanks

My 01 Tahoe came equipped with ETC and traction control,my 01 throttlebody is very similar in appearance the Corvette throttlebody and is different from the redesigned throttlebody that came standard on 03 and later trucks. To change to a throttle cable you'll need to change the pedal setup, change cruise control modules, add a throttle bracket with cable and make PCM programming and wiring changes to accommadate the swap.

There should be a stamping on the block in the back behind the flexplate I believe. It may be on the front, but I know it's on the drivers side, either the front or the back. It will be a circle with 2 numbers in it. That's the year it was cast, but that may not be the year it was marked.
So ... for instance, I have a block that is stamped 00, I would say it's either a 00 or 01 engine.

I have a 2001 5.3L with traction control thus I have the electornic TB. From what I know the TB difference between the vette and the truck is that one is upside down in some sort...(what I was told one day a while back).

What wiring changes need to be made? I will definatly have to have the PCM flashed to remove VATS, EGR, rear 02's etc anyway so that is not a problem. I was thinking that the TPS is still on the electronic TB so you would just get a manual one and plug the TPS in on the manual one and leave the electric crap off and when the PCM is flashed it wouldn't even look for that? Am I on track here or not?
I won't bother with the cruise control anyway yet just want to get it in there and running first!
Thanks for the info guys!

You need new TPS and IAC wiring from the throttle body back to the PCM. The ETC throttle body had a dual TPS (6 wires), but the wires don't even go to the PCM with ETC, they go to the TAC module.
