I've done research on the same subject. It all depends on your mods you have now. 212/218 seems to be a good starting point for a 5.3 cam. any more and you lose low end. It will require the supporting mods as in pushrods, springs and any optional mods while your in there. As for heads either do some port and polish work to yours or get some cnc'd 243's milled or an aftermarket head. All of this will require a tune and a intake and exhaust wouldn't hurt.

It depends what year your truck is also. If you have a newer truck it has the better 799 heads as opposed to the older trucks which have the 706 castings. That being said though it is "better" to start off with a 6.0 depnding on what your goals are because it is a better(larger displacement) platform to start with.

I'm doing heads, cam, LTs, efans, all new exhaust on my 5.3 here in a month or so total I'll have spent about 1100... It's something to tide me over for now, because a 6.0 swap is going to run me about 3-4k considering I want to build the motor from the ground up myself.
