Get a 5.3 if you're going bolt-ons. The extra cubes will really help out once you start modding.
If you really wanna get serious, it's becoming pretty commonplace to swap a 6.0 or 5.7, in which case you really wouldn't need to spend the extra loot on the 5.3.

Yep, I agree. Only real difference is torque, 285 vs 325. My 4.8L misses the extra torque sometimes, especially with the 4WD.
Mods are available for both, you just get a higher place to start with the 5.3L. Unless you get stupid like me and hit the machine shop. Then there is no difference!
