4L80E problem
Bad news is that with less than 10k I have had a handful of "neutral launch" starts from a dead stop.
Good news is that my brother-n-law is a 20+yr GM man and is presently the tranny guru at the local GMC dealer. He says that some of the tolorances in the valve body are loose enough that pistons(?) sometimes get cockeyed (stuck) in the bore until the pressure is enough to pop them loose, giving the neutral launch feeling. He says it can happen on the 4L60's as well, so heads up guys. The valve body needs to be rebuilt or replaced.
More good news is since I need to have him go through it anyway, I am going to put a new converter in the back seat so he can throw it in.

He says the '80 is not as easy to tweak for a firm shift as the '60 but he knows what to do and will show me. I'll keep you all posted.

Re: 4L80E problem
Mine has done it a couple times too, even after my tranny was pretty much completely rebuilt at 11K (now @ 21K). I'm 99% sure they put in a new valvebody, I'll have to check the work order.
What stall are you going with? Yank 2600HD?

Re: 4L80E problem
Well, if anyone can fix it, he can. He has crates of parts that he says he can mix and match to get the best tolorances. I guess I am lucky, since you know the average warranty mechanic will just slap in a rebuild from SERTA.
I am going with a Hughes 2000stall. I asked him about it and he thought 2k was what I would like with the truck being a daily driver (over 120 daily). I am not planning any head or cam work but maybe a SC in the future. I called Hughes and gave them the specs and usage and they recommended 2k as well. If I need more stall, I will probably go with the Yank and swipe some more shop time with the man <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" /> Doing that in the driveway is a bitch.
