4L60E Cracked Case
#1
Hi Guys,
I just finished installing a Transgo shift kit and Corvette servo in my '02 Chevy and took it for a ride. It had nice crisp shifts but about a 1/4 mile down the road I hear a 'tink' sound and noticed smoke trailing behind me. I turned around and went home. Upon removing the heat shield next to the converter I found that about 3" of the lip around the servo hole cracked off.
I installed the servo as per Transgo's instructions and checked that the snap ring was seated properly. Could this be caused by something I did or might this be a factory defect?
Has this happened to anyone else with a modified truck and did the dealer fix it under warranty without blaming it on the shift kit install?

well I have had two crack cases with my transmissions. but everytime i crack them I had also destroyed everything in it. (like a small bomb went off) wound up shearing off the back section of the center case. where the tail end mates.
i take it yours is still drivable?
dont know if the warranty will cover for the aftermarket servo. my idea would be to put the stock one back in and take your chances there.
dont know what they will say about the shift kit though. but you also have other mods done. did any of those mods void your warranty?

Hi 01Thunder,
It is still drivable but only to go around the block since it does leak fluid. I was just looking at it again and removed the servo cover and the 4th apply piston however the rest of the servo assembly doesn't want to come out. I can push it in with a prybar slightly but it just won't come out for some reason. After I heard the 'tink' sound and saw the smoke I turned around and drove it home which was probably about a 1/4 mile and it seemed to shift fine so I don't think there is any damage internally.
As for the warranty I don't know. I could play dumb and not mention I installed a kit and servo. On Monday I will call a friends Olds dealership and see if he can do the warranty work on my truck.
I guess my worst case scenario is to take it to my cousin's garage which is attached to a transmission shop that does performance work and have them change the case and beef up the internals. What really sucks is that they offered to install the kit but I had to do it myself. I should have let them do it and then they would be liable. Well I learned a lesson.

the reason I asked about the warranty is because of the whipple.
but if you get the dealership to do it under warranty and your friend can cover for ya than i would go that way. (Free work!
) I know the feeling about getting trans work done. I just spent $3400 getting my 4L60E built into a 4L65E. and beefed up internals. sounds ike something is jammed in the servo. I think the only way your gonna fix it, is to tear it apart.

If you get a built trans and get it done right. there are no worries. unless you are putting out more than 500 Hp. then you should have worries. these 4L60E's just cant handle much over that. and if someone tells you that he can build one that does, he's lieing. your next best bet is to go to the 4l80E.
