When you have a higher stall converter, you can luanch to lets say 3000 rpm before it locks up and goes, wayy better 60' times. The 4l80e is the way stronger HD trannsmission.

so a new tranny is pretty much a must; and if later I decide to redo the rear end, what all does it need doing to it to keep up with the new found power? and how much does it usually cost?

i belive you can switch over the intake also

you would want to leave the heads if you want stock spec compression

No no. The 6.0 317 heads flow too well to be putting the 4.8 or 5.3 heads on that motor!! The tranny will surely die after you put a 6.0 in. Also, instead of using the stock .052 gaskets you can use FelPro .041's instead. Bring the CR up a bit.

Now, if you had a 5.3 with some long tubes, maybe ASM's or StainlessWorks or something...would you be able to re-use them with a 6.0 swap, or would you have to get new stuff?

Another question...didn't the early 6.0's have cast iron heads? which ones have the aluminum heads? Is there a motor ID sticky somewhere that I'm missing?

You can still use all that stuff! Just stay away from 6.0's with cast iron heads. Try to find one thats 02+ and youll be ok. When you go look at one, check the head to see if it has 317 stamped on the corners. Those are what you want!
